I will be receiving my first Lupron injection this week for the next

3 months to prepare for surgery. I am schedule for an Abdominal

Mymomectomy in June.

I have a Subserous myomas on the outside wall of the uterus the size

of a grapefruit. It is causing a lot of pain and discomfort.

Currently I am on muscle relaxers to help ease the back pain.

Can anyone tell me how big of an incision (bikini cut) they will need

to make for this surgery?

Thanks,

B-las

Could you tell me how this was for you, or do you have a post in here

about your surgery/recovery. I was told today that i need what

appears to be what you had, the 6 inch cut at the bikini line,

myomectomy. Were you admitted to a hospital, how long did you stay

there if so, also how big was your fibroid, etc. I know this is a

lot of questions...feel free to email me privately if you want to not

have it on the board. jenniferATdoitrockapella.com replace AT with @

I don't know how they decide how big to make the

incision. I had a 3.5 inch incision for 1 baseball

sized subserous and 1 lemon-sized intramural...

Hi ,

My experience was very positive all in all. i trusted my surgeon; she's been my

doctor for nearly 20 years. she never once tried to convince me to have a hyst,

and she knew i did not want one, even tho I'm 50. i was admitted to hospital

at 10;30 on a friday, scheduled for surgery around 1. a friend very generously

accompanied me til i was wheeled into the operating room. i wasnt terribly

anxious, but was actually looking forward to being 'out'. i had 8 fibroids

removed, one as large as a grapefruit. my surgery was lengthy- at least 3 hours

cause i had extra scar tissue from previous trauma-- and that;s tougher tissue

to cut thru. i left the hospital the following wednesday-- longer than normal

probably. i had some difficulty getting my digestion back on track-- having a

bowel movement, to be exact. after a past surgery, i'd had adhesions(partial

blockages of the intestine) and my doctor wanted to be extra careful because of

this history and my tendency towards sluggish digestion. so i took it slow on

the food following surgery, and stayed on liquids for the first two days. i was

on a morphine pump til sunday, when they removed my IV fluids line and started

giving me pain meds by mouth. i was fortunate to have a private room, had

brought my radio(i'm a public radio addict) and had a very restful time. i was

up walking as soon as they urged me to and would walk for 10, 15 mins at a time

around the halls--trying to master 'upright!'

upon leaving the hospital, i felt somewhat overwhelmed by the stimulation of the

world-- that's the only way i can describe it-- you're so protected, relatively,

from stimulation, in the hospital. once home, it manifested in low energy, and

quick fatigue-- both consistent with recovery from major surgery, I'm sure, and

a sort of tentative feeling. i live alone, and had friends visit to bring

groceries, if needed. i put food in the freezer before it went in. i managed

stairs every day to fetch my paper and to the roof deck for a nap. the month or

so i had before returning part time to work was a very delicious period of

forced leisure for reading and lolling about.

let me know if you have other questions.

I had subserous myomas removed via myomectomy last fall. My largest

fibroid mass was also " grapefruit " sized, around 12 cm (I think).

My doctor told me to expect an incision of around 5 " , but she was

able to keep it to just 4 " (bikini incision). I didn't have Lupron

beforehand, so this was the incision size for removing that full

grapefruit mass, along with some " seedlings " and a very small

ovarian tumor.

So it IS possible to deny taking Lupron? I'm really against taking

it, as I've read up on it, and really don't like the possible side

effects, and well, it only shrinks the fibroid by 10%, so that seems

very minimal for the possible side effects.

My fibroid is about that size as well (grapefruit), located at the

top of my uterus I believe. My report says it's " effacing the

endometrial canal " and I believe it's classified as pedunculated

submucous.

It sounds to me like I'll have to have the myomectomy, but I'm really

hoping not to. For those of you that have had myomectomy, how long

was your recovery time, and how long would you suggest having someone

with you in home, if you live alone, to take care of you? Also, what

is the usual hospital stay time for a myomectomy? It appears that I

have to pay 10% of my medical bills if I get admitted to inpatient,

so I'm reallllllly hoping to not need to be inpatient, or only be

there like, 1 day.

Any insights/stories would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi...can you tell us what kind of myo you had? Was it laproscopic or abdominal?

More importantly, how are you doing now post-myo? I hope all is well.

, My doc told last summer, that he could do a myomectomy without Lupron.

I've heard a lot of negative stories about the drug too. I imagine, like with

every other issue, all doctors are different. I should think that you could

tell them that you don't want it.

If your fibroid is pedunculated and submucosal wouldn't a Hysteroscopic

Resection be all that is required? this is outpatient surgery entailing no

incisions at all, maybe there is a reason that your doctor hasn't mentioned

this option.Ask him/her if you are a suitable candidate.

If you must take a drug to shrink your fibroids, what about Zoladex?

Can you suggest this to your doctor? I don't think I've ever seen it

mentioned in this group, but I would like to share this information

so that women are aware that Lupron is not the only option. I

learned about Zoladex at a seminar given by Dr. Stringer, (may

he rest in peace) in early November 2002 (a few weeks prior to his

death). Dr. Stringer had mentioned that Zoladex was his preference

over Lupron. He said that Zoladex did the same thing as Lupron,

without the harmful side effects. It's still a drug of course but

based on his theory, it was better than Lupron. I do have a book

written by Dr. Stringer " Uterine Fibroids, What Every

Woman Needs to Know. " It's a Second Edition version, which is a great

reference guide on fibroids. A Laproscopic Myo does not require a

hospital stay or might require a 1 day stay and less recovery time.

Whether or not this would be an option for you, I don't know but it

would not hurt to look into it further. Ask your doctor, research,

and read the messages witin this group.

I'm scheduled for a myo on the 10th with my largest fibroid being 9

cm within my uterine wall and I'm not required to take any drugs such

as Lupron. I'm not sure that my fibroid is large enough to require

so, but it's large enough to give me problems. It's just good that I

don't require Lupron, because I agree with you and would refuse the

injections. I've read about woman with fibroids larger than mine and

did not have Lupron injections prior to surgery. I guess it depends

on the surgeon and their qualifications or preferences, but up to us

to be informed of additional information and options.

Good Luck to you.
