Guest guest
Hey guys! Have a problem here I need some help with. Our Mito Dr. put on Neurontin. She can swallow a pill so we opened the capsule and spinkled it on her food. BAD IDEA! It is so bitter it kept a bad taste in my mouth all night and nausiated was putting it mildly. So today we tried the liquid. She still cant stand the bitter taste although much better than the capsules. Any ideas what I can do to get her to take it? I need a quick fix fast, but I just dont know what would be strong enough in taste to cover all the bitterness. If you have any clues please share them....this is shear torchure for all of us here and the really bad thing is I recommended this med. Thanks for all the wonderful ideas I know you are gonna send my way! Horsley Mom to

Here are two things that have worked for Emilie with liquid meds-- Add a small amount (a teaspoon?) of grape juice concentrate, the kind that comes in a can in the juice aisle and is meant to be mixed with water to make a whole pitcher...but do not dilute it any. Mix it into a glass of " Pine-Orange Banana " juice--this is a fresh juice that can be found in the refrigerated section of the store with the orange juice cartons. The juice has a fairly strong flavor. When Emilie needs to take a pill, we grind it and mix it with a little bit of dry Countrytime Pink Lemonade mix and just a tiny bit of water. This seems to cover the taste well enough for her, though I don't think she's taking anything as bitter as the Neurontin. Good luck, -- Mom to: Emilie (15), cerebral palsy; also undiagnosed episodic vomiting, flushing, pallor, purple hands after meals, purple when chilled, dark circles under eyes, sudden drowsiness, fatigue, low-grade fevers, reduced muscle tone, glassy eyes, dilated pupils, irritability, diarrhea, constipation, tachycardia, heat intolerance, difficulty with fasting, etc. Positive response to carnitine (improved energy & mood) Kaitlin (15), cerebral palsy, asthma, mild autonomic symptoms Ian (20) migraines
Guest guest
Have you tried to see if your pharmacist could compost that into a gummy bear? They could add a different flavor to it and make the taste easier. Alessia Cowee wrote: , In my opinion chocolate frosting or chocolate syrup cover the taste of almost anything. Failing that and should the sugar be of concern, how about peanut butter? Good luck!! Guest guest
, go to your pharmacy and see if they can compound this into a gummy bear for her? They will have to be a certified compost pharmacist. They can add differnt flavors, I think to counter the bad taste for her. Good Luck, Kim, mom to Lucas 3, possible mito encephomyopathy disorder Tommie & Horsley wrote: Hey guys! Guest guest
I don't know if it will work with Neurontin, but when was steroid dependent (for his breathing) when he was little, we would bury the Prednisone in ice cream and he would then be able to swallow it down...just enough ice cream or jelly to cover the pill completely, then it slid right down his throat. Guest guest
: I don't know if could do this; but....my second son hated to take a certain medicine because he didn't like the "tropical" flavor. So we would coat his tongue with peanut butter and then mix the medicine also with chocolate syrup. That helped him alot. Of course it doesn't help the fact that he loves peanut butter and chocolate. See by coating the tongue you are covering up all those little taste buds. The other thing we do now that he is older (which wouldn't work for our kids) is that we plug his nose while we pour the medicine down. Again it covers up the taste buds, but in a different sort of way. Good luck to whichever you choose. Of course you can always get it flavored at the pharmacy and have her take chocolate.
