I've done this too - I call it zoning out into auto-driving on the expressway

- where your mind seems to wander off without you directing it, and all of a

sudden you're 5 or 10 miles farther along and can't remember driving it.

I've also passed exits and had to turn around - and I've even done it again

after turing around! And I'm only 41.

I also forget names frequently - I've heard this is from worrying about what

you're going to say next instead of concentrating on the person and the name

and making the association clear in your mind.

I can never find my sunglasses attachment for my regular glasses, and if I

didn't leave my keys and purse in my car in the driveway, I'd lose them too.

We all have so many things on our minds that sometimes I'm amazed that we

remember anything!

I suppose most of us have experienced this and then wondered, " If there was a

crisis would I have seen it and reacted to it? " My feeling is that probably

not. Maybe that's what causes some accidents, but we'll never know. I think it

depends upon the difficulty of the task. I can't imagine that you would

'zone-out' if you were bringing a plane in for landing.

I can't find any reason to be afraid of dementia in the fact that I

don't remember people's names until I've met them about three times, or

that I blank out on the freeway sometimes because I'm thinking of

something more interesting than the same old trip to the store - these

things have been going on since ever. If the brain had to completely

concentrate on every little automatic thing we do we'd never have time

to figure out something new - gotta go on autopilot for the really

boring stuff. I refuse to even try to remember every time I've cleaned

a toilet - but I know I've done it a bunch. Some of these distractions

and forgets are from having a life, not losing your memory or your mind.

I know a fellow editor who woke up and made coffee and thought it was a tad

on the weak side. Then she realized she'd forgotten to put coffee in the

filter. So she made another cup. She forgot the coffee the second time too.

I take reminyl because my memory is bad and I transpose letters and numbers

now. I have taken it for about 3 years. I will have to give it up in Jan.

because I lose my drug coverage then when medicare becomes my primary

insurance as it is over 200 a month and I have many other prey drugs just

for life support so several will have to go as I am now using over $1000.00

a month on maintenance drugs.
