Guest guest
Pam, for what it's worth, i recovered at home alone with no one staying with me-- and had no trouble with stairs, with cooking, with showering. friends did marketing for me if necessary. but i did not require live-in help. good luck, robin >Dear Any/All who have had Myo's > >I live in Massachusetts 7 hours from my family in NY. Guest guest
Pam, This is just my opinion - a car rid is probably manageable if you can sit comfortably in the back seat. You may need an ice pack. Lots of pillows. Have your painkillers with you, of course. Is there any chance you could take a train home? Fares are pretty cheap. I live in Boston and was a car passenger on the 6-hour drive up to Rome, NY 19 days after my myo, and the roads were kind of bad - potholes. The only problem I had was a little swelling and feeling a little tired after the ride. Janet > Dear Any/All who have had Myo's > > I live in Massachusetts 7 hours from my family in NY. Guest guest
WHat about the possibility of having the surgery in NY? Several people on the list have had surgery with Dr. West (www.repmed.com). Good luck - --- lilacpj@... wrote: > Dear Any/All who have had Myo's > > I live in Massachusetts 7 hours from my family in > NY. I am single and live > alone. If I do have to have a myo... Guest guest
Thanks for the suggestion, . However, my insurance does not allow me to go out of state for surgery unless it was an emergency situation, of course. I already checked into doing that. > WHat about the possibility of having the surgery in > NY? Guest guest
I had mine done in Nashville, TN, when I lived in FL. I stayed in Nashville for a total of 3 days and my in-laws drove me back home. Wasn't too bad as I slept the whole trip. I did need a blanket though.keep getting major chills. If you can recline the seat to a comfy position, it isn't as bad as you might expect. The worst experience I had was just the fact that my in-laws were there! > > I live in Massachusetts 7 hours from my family in > > NY. I am single and live > > alone. If I do have to have a myo... Guest guest
Where are you in Boston? I'm out here too, maybe I could be of help to you pre- or post-surgery. You can reply to me off-list if you prefer. Take care, Janet > Thanks for the suggestion, . > However, my insurance does not allow me to go out of state for surgery unless > it was an emergency situation, of course. Guest guest
I drove 3-1/2 hours the day I was released from the hospital, and had no trouble at all. I was very comfortable in a van, just having a reclining seat and a (very important!) pillow between me and the seat belt. Granted, I skated through surgery pretty easily: no nausea, needed very little pain medication, no gas problems. I probably would have needed a stop if it had been a 7 hour drive, but still think it's do-able. I think flying would actually be harder in some ways because you end up waiting so much, and can't always recline your seat to a comfortable position. Sitting upright was much more difficult for me. Regarding having someone with you post-surgery, I don't think you're going to know whether you'll need the help or not until you see how you react to the surgery. If it's possible, make arrangements to allow you to make the decision about staying home alone or driving to NY at the last minute. I probably would have managed at home by myself. I certainly didn't have any problem climbing stairs, but I was glad to have someone with me to fetch, pick up, tie my shoes, etc. for the first couple of days after surgery. Good luck!
