Guest guest
Angel, When we travel (always by car because I can't fly) I make sure to bring a cooler with foods I can eat. I bring my own snacks and a few sandwiches in case I can't find anything to eat at restaurants. If you have to stop and eat a meal I try to stick with regular restaurants rather than fast food places. This way I can order a large salad or items off the menu that I know don't contain a lot of salt. Requesting that things be made unsalted is good but not a guarantee that it will be done that way. Here is a good resource for eating out that gives you good menu choices... You need Adobe Acrobat to read it as it's a .pdf file http://www.kidney.org/atoz/pdf/diningout.pdf I hope you have fun on your trip! Amy G. taking vacation--low sodium diet Hi everyone. We are planning a vacation in TN and were wondering how you guys travel and keep your low sodium diet in check. The people whom I share custody of my sons with are concerned (and actually had given me the okay then just recently changed their mind) that we cant take a vacation and stick to a low sodium diet---we have hearing scheduled for the 23 to hopefully clear this up. I have been making and freezing home cooked low sodium meals to bring. We rented a cabin in Pigeon Forge, TN with a kitchen so that we can cook. I'm pretty sure there is a grocery store in the area. Anyway, just looking for tips or how you handle your vacations. Thanks, Angel Waters
Guest guest
It is hard to travel on all the diets that I am on...Low sodium and phosphorus, but I am a pilot and have to travel just about everyday. I have worked with a dietician and have come up with certain things that I can eat. I know pretty much what airport has what food. Example....Pittsburgh, I eat a salad with mandarian oranges and some salad dressing that I bring myself....Charlotte has a wonderful chicken sandwich...I do cheat and get a side of BBQ sauce though.... Once you get used to the diet, it gets easy. Also, like someone said, after you are used to low sodium, you can take one bite and know you shouldn't eat it. I live in Knoxville and can tell you 100% Pigeon Forge has stores around it. If you can cook for him at home, you can cook for him there.
