Guest guest
Hi Soheila, Make sure you're taking a good quality probiotic, avoid sugar and foods containing yeast and drink lots of water when taking the Minocin -- the acid reflux problem is worse if the mino doesn't go all the way down. Also, I find taking a couple of tablespoons of northern milled flax every day helps a great deal with stomach upset, acid reflux and most other digestive system problems. As a plus, the oils in northern milled flax are supposed to be beneficial for rheumatic disease. Keep the flax in an opaque refrigerated container to optimize its effectiveness. Hang in there, most of the initial side effects from taking mino minimize and/or go away as your system adjusts. Hugs a Re: rheumatic anything for upset stomac after taking minocin? Guest guest
a, You say that " most of the initial side effects from taking mino minimize and/or go away as your system adjusts " but I've been on the AP since August 2006 and I am having more nausea now than in the beginning. Do you or anyone else have any suggestions for someone in my situation? Guest guest
Hi Roneice, I'm sorry to hear you're having such a tough time. Are you sure the nausea is connected to taking the Minocin? If so and you're already taking a good probiotic and watching your diet, I'd also suggest you try taking northern milled flax. If that doesn't help, then I would try taking the mino with some food. It works best on an empty stomach but its efficacy isn't reduced too much by food so if you need to eat something with it to reduce the nausea, then that's what you'll probably need to do. Avoid taking anything dairy with it but a small amount of a carb, such as some crackers, might help you to feel better and wouldn't reduce its effectiveness too much. I hope you feel better, there's nothing worse than nausea as far as I'm concerned -- I had 9 months of it 24/7 when pregnant and I'd taking being in pain over that any day. :} Hugs a Re: rheumatic anything for upset stomac after taking minocin? Guest guest
a - Thanks for your response. My biggest problem is the morning dose. The evening dose is typically fine with only an occasional upset. But I've tried everything from plenty of fluid and/or food to minimal fluid and/or food. I will definitely try the flax but if you would, please let know if you take it before or after you take the antibiotics and depending on when, how long between the flax and the antibiotic. Also, do I mix the flax with anything or am I supposed to down 2 teaspoons and chase it with water. Thanks again. I Roniece, I only take minocin in the evening, to avoid the worse side effects I get in the morning. If I feel I need 2 doses a day for a few days, I take a dose an hour or more after an early lunch, and then the second dose 30-45 minutes or so before bedtime. (don't take it less than 30 minutes before lying down.) Lunch always protects me from the side effects (nausea and metallic taste) better than breakfast. I suppose if the after lunch lunch dose is a little reduced, but the before bed dose should be full effect, because it is easily 3 hours after dinner. I try to get the doses as far apart as possible, but it is usually about 10 hours, rather than 12. -- Jean
Guest guest
Gees What a great idea! It never occurred to me to take my meds during lunch hours rather than breakfast hours. I would probably only need to adjust the Nizoral by about an hour. I am on 3 antibiotics Doxy (Mino not a good idea since I have Lupus), Alinia and Amoxicillin. Twice a day I take 200 mg each of Doxy and Alinia but only on Monday Wednesday and Friday. I take 200 mg of Amoxicillin but only the first seven days of the month as I am pulsing this antibiotic. Thanks for the great idea. ________________________________ From: rheumatic [mailto:rheumatic ] On Behalf Of Probert Sent: Monday, April 09, 2007 5:45 PM rheumatic Subject: Re: rheumatic anything for upset stomac after taking minocin? Guest guest
Hi Roneice, You can take the flax pretty much any time of day so just experiment to see what works best for you. I saw from another post that you take doxy instead of mino and doxy is more prone to cause nausea and probably should be taken with food, i.e. after you've eaten something. The idea of trying to take it after lunch instead of before breakfast is probably a good idea to try. As for how to take flax, you can sprinkle on some food like cereal or a salad, mix it with a fluid or just swallow a couple of tablespoons with some water, which is how I usually do it. It doesn't taste bad, rather nutty but it is dry and grainy so some fluid helps to wash it down. Hugs a Re: rheumatic anything for upset stomac after taking minocin? Guest guest
A few soda crackers or piece of dry toast will help immensely with nausea. Neither one has much calcium in it so it will not bond with the minocin. I have always taken a few crackers with my minocin and it has worked very well for me this way. Guest guest
Hi sohelia! Geoff here. You wrote, and Roniece concurred: " I have started taking minocine 100 mg twice a day just last week. my stomac is upst... " Try dropping the dosage to that recommended in the AP, 100mg 2x/day on M-W-F, or 100mg 1x/day M-W-F. The dose you're on is the one developed by Dr. Trentham that essentially looks to Minocin as a less-dangerous anti-inflammatory, not necessarily an effective treatment for the root cause. That doesn't mean it's not effective for the root cause, it's just the approach they took and thanks to it, we have a much easier time getting the Rx's for the AP. Guest guest
Hi Geoff you mean it doesn't make any difference if i take the minocin only 3 days a week or whole week?. I have SD and the only hope i have is antibiotic therapy. soheila --- Geoff <geoff@...> wrote: > Hi sohelia! Guest guest
Lindi, I really don't know. I've never been asked that question before. However, let me suggest you contact Natren's. They not only make some of the best probiotics around, but they provide counsel and support while you are using them. They should have your answer. www.natren.com 1-866-462-8736 or asknatasha @ Natren.com Natasha and her husband own Natrens.
