Thanks for the link Bart. I thought it was quite interesting that Sweden has a

opt-out rather than opt-in policy when it comes to organ/tissue donation. I

wonder if it makes it any easier on the families? That way they need to say no

rather than being talked to about saying yes to donation.

The info on compliance was quite interesting too. You would think that people

who have been on daily drugs for years prior to transplant would keep up with

them post transplant....interesting read.

Re: Marcia

Hey Marcia,

I've been gone for a few days and just got to your post regarding

equilibrium, etc. At different times I've had problems with

equilbrium...always due to a middle ear problem - fluid getting trapped.

For me relief came with a diuretic. I sure do understand how scary it can

be and I hope you get some real answers soon. I'll be thinking and

praying

for you - hang in there kiddo. Hugs, Rita

Thanks for the post Barton! I'll read up on it more tomorrow. It's very early

in the morning right now. I saved it as a favorite for easy access.

Thanks

All,

Whilst meandering, I discovered this website. Snoop about, some reasonably

good stuff here. Some facts about transplantation; cyclosporine (which I

knew as FK-506 in the early 80's as a chemist) and more factoids about

transplantation and non-compliance (and associated heterograft failure

rates).

Seems shocking that failure to take one's tablets COULD occur after years on

dialysis, waiting, and so on, but apparently this is so. Complacency? Thy

name is man. I mean, really, anyone who can follow a renal diet with any

stringency can surely track QID meds. Perhaps it is normative to simply

forget one's, well, desperation, but...facing it all, I can't see it.

Update in a year or two post TX....promise :)

Re: Marcia

Marcia,

Norvasc IS a calcium channel blocker...you might want to check into a

drug switch if your neph is o.k. with it. Who knows it might help you out a

bit....that would be way wonderful!

Just from my personal observations around the renal clinic, hearing nurses

and doctors talking, etc. (nothing scientific), my impression is that young

people in or around their 20's are particularly prone to skipping

anti-rejection meds and then having a rejection episode. It's just the

nature of youth, I guess.

I know the transplant people here would love for Canada to have automatic

kidney donation except if the family specifically opts out. These things are

being considered, but I guess it's hard to change the status quo.
