Ron,

Hello my old friend! Happy New Year to you and your family!

I get a flu shot every year- I have had to for the last 12 years or so. I've never gotten the flu because of the shot, and it has prevented me from getting the flu all of those years. And I was actively working in an Internal Medicine office for 6 or 7 of those years.

Even with being on immunosuppressants fro the last 3 years, my MD's have insisted that I get both a flu shot and last year a pnuemo shot- (lasts for 10 years or so). You want to make sure you get the shots- not the nasal flu stuff. The nasal stuff is live virus- so it's a no- no.

Love to you,

Tracie

Ron, my pulmonologist, immunologist & internist all felt that I should get

the flu shot; I got the pneumonia shot last fall. Like Tracie, even though

I have worked in hospitals & clinics for 30+ years, I haven't had the flu

since 1973. My health habits (nutrition, exercise, etc.) have never been

anything to brag about, so I think the flu shot has definitely helped. The

problem this year is that the scientists who develop the vaccine each year

guess at the likeliest strain to protect against and this year they guessed

wrong. However, even if you do still get the flu, it may be less severe if

you have had the shot. You may get an achy reaction from the shot, but you

cannot get the actual flu from the shot; however, you CAN get the flu from

the nasal vaccine, because as Tracie pointed out, it contains a live

vaccine. It takes 2-4 weeks to develop immunity after receiving the shot &

many docs & clinics have run out. If you can't get it, or decide against

it, your best protection is old-fashioned handwashing: very frequently,

especially after touching doorknobs in public places, shopping cart handles,

etc. and KEEP YOUR FINGERS OFF YOUR FACE. Your eyes & nose are very

receptive to viruses, even more than your mouth. A quick rinse isn't

effective; you need to wash your hands for 15-30 seconds. Time it; you will

be surprised at how long that seems. The waterless cleansers are better

than nothing, but I wouldn't rely on them if soap & water are available.

Good luck & don't forget that grits will kill germs, cure hemorrhoids &

dissolve rust. Rose

Hi Ron,

My Dr. did not want me to take the flu shot. I have not taken it in two years. I was sick last year and this year. I wish he would let me but he said I couldn't take it. So there you go, one that couldn't take the flu shot.

Love ya,

Hi Ron. I was told by all 4 of my drs last fall that I should get a

flu shot. I am on Methotrexate and Plaquenil for immunosuppressants.

Believe me, I was a little concerned as well, that's why I took

a " Dr. poll " (pcp or pulmo, neuro, derm & rheumy)! I got my shot in

November and so far so good.......... Debbie T.

PS I was told it wasn't a " live " virus.

Now I remember why I cannot take the flu shot.

They use eggwhites as the suspension and if you are allergic to eggs both the yellow and white NO SHOT. I am only allergic to the whites go figure.

CRS finally turned off.
