Dear Friends of the Pancreas Support Network,

According to published reports, Mathew Perrry, a nice unasumming, as far as I know, young actor on T.V.s hit show, " FRIENDS, " has a classic case of Pancreatitis. Watch this story in the tabloid news develop over the coming months and years and see if my assumption is correct. He apparently had his second attack of pancreratitis while he was in Texas filming a " Servicing Sara " episode of the hit show. I', very sorry that this young man has pancreatitis, I hope having somewon in a high profile position will help shed light on this disease and bring in more money for research to find a cure for this dreaded disease.

i've not heard that vicodin aggravates the pancreas, but i do know that

taking too much tylenol can damage your liver. that's one reason my md

changed me from darvocet to ultram because it had so much tylenol. i don't

know anything at all about the meth besides the fact that the illegal mfg. is

a BIG problem in our state.

hi I'm new here. I have some questions for you all.

first, there is an article today about :

http://www.usatoday.com/life/enter/tv/2001-03-08-matthew-perry.htm

it says he is doing vicodin and speed in addition to alcohol.

now I know vicodin is bad for pancreatitis because it

contains a lot of tylenol and I have read that tylenol

aggravates it.

But what I am wondering about is speed. I have taken

meth at the onset of an attack and it has killed the

pain immediately. But I am not sure about the longterm

effects if methamphetamine would make this disease

worse or not. (This is NOT a question of drug abuse)

I have also heard of people using cocaine for the pain

and that helps too. (Again, use, NOT abuse).

Has anybody used either of these drugs and found that

it made the pancreatitis worse in the longrun? Are

there any doctors on this list that can comment?

Thanks!

I read to that has pancreatitis, but I wonder from what? I am a

huge fan of his, and now I find out we share the same disease anyway, I do

NOT think that you should be using speed to take the pain away. that stuff is

not good for you and it will mess you up, especially if you have pancreatitis.

Here in San Diego the news said that is addicted to vicodin,

they did not say anything about speed. I also read the article in people that

said he has pancreatitis. the vicodin makes more since.

Did anyone read the article in " People " on him? I was kinda ticked. They

made it sound like the only way you get pancreatitis is from drug or alcohol

abuse. I know it's the most common reason, but it's not the only reason.

Someone at work asked me about it on Friday - when I explained why I came in

late, b/c of the CATscan for pancreatitis, she said, " Oh, is that why you

know so much about AA and stuff? B/c I saw in People that pancreatitis is

caused by alcoholism. " No, the reason I know so much about AA is that I

worked on a teen psych unit and used to accompany the girls to AA meetings,

and my stepfather has been in recovery for 20 years. My pancreatitis is

ideopathic. If truly has chronic pancreatitis (and personally,

I think he does - how many times does one person go to the hospital for the

" flu " ?), I wish he'd do for pancreatitis what J. Fox has done for

Parkinsons, and get some correct info out there. Maybe raise some more

research money - YEAH!

i agree it makes me mad to!! every time i go into the emergency room, the

doctor will look at me and say '' your to young to be drinking that much''.

mine is hereditary which means i was born with it, but the doctors they don't

believe me because it is so rare to be born with it, and to have it run in

the family, so they just flat out don't believe me. its very frustrating!

Group I don't know how factual it is but I read had

pancreatitis from substance abuse. My problem with this is that so

many of us suffer for other reasons. This continues the

generalization that one must be an alcoholic or drug user

exclusively. Therefore the medical community and public have a

tendency to view this disease with a skeptical attitude. the very

first question when I recently went to the ER with an attack was do

you drink or take drugs. The NIH website names pancreatits as mainly

caused by alcohol. As a matter of fact I emailed them with a

complaint that a gov't facility is giving the public a 1950's opinion

and in this day and age they should be informed. I agree that anyone

who suffers should have help. I also think we don't recieve it at

first because of this negative attitude, as if we deserved it because

of our lifestyle. a

Yes, Yes, Yes!!! I agree. It would be so great if he would " come out of the

closet " with his CP!! I also feel that the reference to CP being a result of

Alcoholism is damaging but let's face it don't most of us face that very

attitude with our own health professionals. Altjhough I have been in recovery

for 13 years Alcohol was not my drug of choice. I told a doctor once that if

he can show me where being stupid and getting addicted to cacaine causes

pancreatitis then I will take responsibility for it otherwise please stop

askling me if I am sure I did not have a serious drinking problem in hte

recent past. I am having a badddddd day so I am testy!!! Even so,

I am sending you all visions of white and pink healing light, wrap yourself

in them and feel better.

Oh, Yes...I wish for the same thing!!! Do you think he has a fan club

sort of site on the Internet? To where we could possibly write to him

about chronic pancreatitis and let him know that maybe God has allowed

this to happen to him so that he can bring this to the publics eyes as

J. Fox has with his Parkinsons. I sure hate to hear that

has this, but I do know that good things will come out

of a bad situation! So maybe in time. I would be willing to write to

him, especially to let him know about this wonderful support group!

That's a wonderful idea! But the fact is that he is famous and probably

doesn't have time for this group. but who knows maybe I am wrong, I sure hope

so!

Hi Shanon

I felt totally outraged when I read that people article. I had to literally

throw it away to keep from stewing over it. It was eating me up. they

didn't stop to think for one minute that maybe he had pancreatitis

first...............and then the drug problem. It gave me flash backs of my

ordeal when I was " labled " as an alcoholic or a drug seeker because I wanted

the pain to be gone. That is what I feel that they are doing to him. I can

only imagined how outraged he is when he reads that kind of crap in these

articles. If they are going to investigate so they can publish

info............then go the whole nine yards and find out the " whole " story.

Sorry, just had to vent that. hee hee hee

,

This is , I am the one who said I thought 's Pancreatitis

was due to alcoholism. I realize we are all stereo typed as alcoholics, but

I saw on the news where he has been put in hospital several times to " dry

out " from drugs and alcohol.

I would not have made that statement if I had not heard it on the news and if

he had not made a statement about having to go and be detoxed several times.

I try not to stereo type people and have had Pancreatitis long enough to

know not to stereo type someone with it as an alcoholic if I did not know it.
