Guest guest
Ok. Here it is again.... Hi, I wanted to comment on this issue of an employer and an insurance company deciding upon an exclusion for the treatment of obesity... > Subject: Denied because of size of company. > > I hate to tell you this but it has nothing to do with the > insurance company. > I have had the same problem. When a company goes to an insurance > company and > asks for insurance for their employees, they try to keep the insurance as > inexpensive as possible. They negotiate a master policy. The > employer chooses > what benefits he would like his employees to have and then the insurance > company quote them a price based on that coverage. If it's being > denied it > is because your employers didn't want it included in the policy they > negotiated in order to keep the premiums down and this has > nothing to do with > the insurance company. Kind of a like a parent buying a car for a kid. The > purchaser decides which car he wants to buy for his child. The > dealer has no > responsibility to the child if he/she doesn't like what the > parent purchased. > <very saddened> > There is a little more to it The way you put it sounds a little cynical but doesn't show the true level of discrimination and illegality of the " obesity exclusion " in insurance policies. For example you might not be surprised to find that no insurance company sells a policy that excludes the treatment of AIDS. If you were just interested in saving money why not sell a policy that excludes AIDS treatment? AIDS treatment is spectacularly expensive. No company has a policy that excludes the treatment of lung cancer in smokers. No company has a policy that excludes the treatment of liver disease in alcoholics. Hmmm... Obviously no company has a policy that specifically excludes diseases that are only problems in women. Imagine what would happen if they tried. So it means if you go out and intentionally use a " dirty " needle, inject drugs and get AIDS, your insurance will definitely cover all of the very expensive care required. And again no insurance policy in the United States and no employer in America have an " exclusion " for AIDS. But many do have an exclusion for the treatment of obesity... It is not just the money. It is the fact that they can get away with discrimination against an obese patient in the area of health care. Discrimination pure and simple. AIDS, smoking and Drinking are OK. Obesity is not. The underlying and unspoken message is clear. If you allow people to continue to discriminate against you because of your weight then they will. It requires a powerful will power and commitment to rise up and fight against discrimination. Those in power often refuse to see discrimination as discrimination and think it is the way it should be. AIDS smoking and drinking are treated and morbid obesity is allowed to kill people without treatment. AIDS is not caused by a genetic component of the patient, obesity is. Smoking is not a genetic disease, obesity is. What are you going to do about it? It your life and health. It is your family's life and health. Remember the movie Network? We're Mad as Heck and we're not going to take it any more! What if all 300 people on this list and all 500 trying to get the surgery identified your insurance company, the state commissioner of insurance, the local newspapers and the Radio and TV stations and all 300 of us wrote and letter and called and emailed and faxed each one of them every day for a year? Could we get through to them? Would you do it? Some of you are lawyers could 1,000 people make a difference if everyone tried to go to court to get their grieve heard? RR Rutledge, M.D., F.A.C.S. Guest guest
Beth, my daughter's pediasure has always been covered by medicaid since she has the tube. They just need a written explaination and how many calories are needed from your doctor. This is all set up, for us, thru a home health care company. They get the orders from the dr(as well as insurance), and I basically tell them what I need and when. I beleve calorie intake has to be specific; for example, Chelsea is approved for 600 calories/ day or 2 1/2 cans. I hope you don't have any problems getting approval, that stuff is so expensive! e, Chelsea's mom(non-specific mito)
Guest guest
will not drink anything with thickit even though he aspirates. He would rather go without. If you watch were you get it you can buy it at a much lower price. They make a gallon size that is available in the pharmacies. We bought one of the big and one of the quart sizes and then just kept filling the smaller one from the large. (It makes a great gravy) It does make the drink or food grainy. Our insurance would not pay for it. One of the insurances we had would pay for Pedisure but four others will not. One of the biggest cost breaks we got was moving to Ensure or the generic equivalent from the Pedisure. The people at the Children's Hospital in Denver gave us the values charts from the Ensure and the Pedisure. The two biggest differences were the salt and the calcium. The children's version had lower salt and higher calcium. Since we were trying to avoid added calcium because was on polycitra and we didn't want the kidney stones we were happy to switch. Hope for you the best. Twana > I use thick it every day with my feeding paqtients. It works great, but I > will tellyou it takes some getting used to for texture. Guest guest
I also heard that Medicaid will cover PediaSure, if you have a prescription. Does anyone get it like this? Bethany, Jessie has gotten her pediasure through a combo of WIC and medicaid through the years. Simply ask your doc for a script and present it to your pharmacy. May take a few days and some preauthorization. BUT IT IS COVERED. Good Luck with your picky eater. I went to the doc today and Jess is 2lbs. lighter and now anemic! Guest guest
Hi. I know exactly how you feel about all the diff. drs and diagnoses and tests that come back normal (my spinal tap came back okay too). I'm sorry I can't help you with the medical stuff, but I can sympathize with how you feel right now. I was like that last summer when I didn't know what was going on in my body but I knew there was something wrong! The drs. all had conflicting opinions and I felt like my head was spinning. I do know that Aisha helped me out a lot especially with the medical stuff. I can remember she also told me to try and calm down and not get all stressed out and upset, cause the stress just makes you feel worse and in more pain. She was a big help to me back then and so was everyone else in the group. I was very lucky to find them. So try and calm down (I know it's hard). I'm sure someone in the group who is more knowledgable in the medical area can advise you better than I can. Hang in there, okay? Guest guest
Kim, I was first diagnosed with biopsy of a lymph node of my chest in my lungs and it was positve sarc and then a MRI showed white patches along with all the neuro symptoms I have to go along with neuro sarc is how I got the diagnoses of neuro sarc it took me a while before I got the diagnoses of neuro sarc and to tell you the truth it scared me to death getting that diagnoses but yet some peace of mind cause I knew I wasn't feeling this way for no reason. But now i'm just trying to get a good treatment regimen going so I can get a grip of the symptoms. The topomax and neurontin and plaquenil have helped a bit and so has the methotrexate, but now i'm in a flare so it kinda feels like i'm back to square one. I feel your frustration and anger sweetie and if you wanna talk i'm here for you. Just don't give up, there is an answer and don't let them tell you there's not. I know it's scarey but we are here for you to help support you I don't have all the answers but maybe I can help in some small way. Guest guest
Hi Kim, >>I got the results the fluid is perfect. Honey that is quite normal for neurosarcoidosis. You cannot diagnosis NS from a spinal tap. Don't worry about it. It is just ruling out other illnesses and diseases of the Central Nervous System. >>so now they said there is def a lession they dont know from what or how significant it is( arent all brain lessions signifiant?) Absolutely. All brain lesions are significant. What are your blood tests like? ESR, CRP, ACE, Calcium, Biochem panel... >>they do not think its sarc Why? >>and if it is its not active What are they using to test how active it is? Have you had a gallium scan? >>i dont know where to turn from here what do i do? who do i see now I have seen them all. someone please help me where do I go from here? You have to ask them what they are basing their findings on. ESR, CRP blood tests are markers of inflammation, and if they are raised then you have an active inflammatory illness in your system. If you have a raised ACE then you prob have sarcoid. If you have a lung sarc biopsy and then have neuro problems they are usually connected. ACE is a marker for a specific type of inflammation found in patients with sarcoid, not all patients but around 80% of patients, so find out if you have a raised ACE in your blood or not. Or if you have had one. Remember if you are on medication, your blood tests will be tainted. Do you have a copy of the MRI? Do you have a copy of the report that came with it? Ask to see it. Ask to speak with a radiologist to discuss the results. Find out what the lesion could be and narrow it down. Sarcoidosis is diagnosed from elimination of other illnesses. You may be like Dee and it may take a while to find a good team of doctors. Your current doctors simply might just have you in the " no " basket and even though you feel all the pieces fit your doctors won't go out of their way to help you. That means it's time to change doctors. If you can find a good immunologist, or perhaps see someone like Dr Baughman, then perhaps you will have better luck. Often we just have to keep firing the idiots until we find the right doctor who will work with us, including one who is willing to help piece together the puzzles. Right now you have a diagnosis of sarcoidosis and a lesion in your brain. You need someone looking after you. Don't give up - find a doctor who will help you back to health. Love Aisha. -- (no subject) hey everyone, today is the first day my head is off the pillow since they did the spinal tap on monday. First of all let say that i had 349 emails this past week so i skimmed through alot of them Im glad Jeri that you and gregg are home that is the best medicine. S fell? Take your time get it out of your system sometimes we just need to do that but know prayer are with you and hope you get well soon mom needs you and hubby and kids and we miss you. ok they did the tap which went fast painless and quit well i drank and layed flat all day monday tues i got up to pee and wham the headache hit and flat on my back is where i have been until this morning all day little by little it has been sub siding. I got the results the fluid is perfect. so now they said there is def a lession they dont know from what or how significant it is( arent all brain lessions signifiant?) they do not think its sarc and if it is its not active and they want to repeat the mri in march BAM i feel like i got knocked inot last year I cant beleive this they find a lession i have the symptoms but a result of the test and they throw all of the other stuff away like it doesnt matter. I made a ppoint with a neuro surgeon(even though i like the one i saw and felt she was com) i dont know where to turn from here what do i do? who do i see now I have seen them all. someone please help me where do I go from here? Guest guest
Kim, that's ok.. We've all been there, done that, bought the Tee shirt... Most of our so called friends ran out the door when we first get so sick...I think they are afraid that they maybe asked to do something.. I had three of the best long term friends and I would have sworn that none of them would ever leave my side, but when it got to when I couldn't walk that quit coming by, then they quit calling.. Quit everything... One of my friends called me yesterday for the first time in a year.. I wanted to ask her where they hell she'd been for the last year.. but I didn't I held my tongue, one because I love her, and two I want her back in my life, she's had a grandchild since I had last heard from her...It really pisses me off, but I not only want my friends back, I want my life back!!!! So you sent it to us.. We feel the same way.. so no worries...Your anger and despair are safe with us... Hugs, -- (no subject) sorry for the email it wasnt meant for you guys ive been catching alot of shit from people because I guess im falling short of whatever im so tired of having to defend my self i needed to vent and i hit group and i didnt mean to send it to you guys so sorry just weeding out............................... ..
