I went and bought some fruit today, and told her this was a " free "

food. I was right then in telling her that, is there any fruits

that I should stay away from. She did ask for banana's are these

okay every once in a while, the doctors only restricted her salt,

not anything else.

What about homemade smoothies?

There are lots of things to eat as snacks which have negligible sodium. If

potassium wasn't restricted (and it shouldn't be, unless a person has

already permanently lost a lot of kidney function, usually), there's no need

and no advantage in restricting potassium whatsoever.

I don't think going over her 2000 mg target by a couple of hundred once in a

while is going to make much difference, if she's hungry. It's just a target.

The usual range for people with kidney disease is 1500 to 2500 mg anyway.

Having a good appetite is never a bad sign. So, why not a bowl of cereal

(there are plenty of relatively low sodium choices), unsalted peanut butter,

a chocolate bar, a few cookies, toast and jam, melba toast, a couple of

graham crackers, etc. A slice of bread is only 130 mg of sodium. That's not

very much. High sodium foods are the ones that approach and go beyond 250 or

300 mg. For example, just four olives has about 600 mg of sodium, a teaspoon

of soya sauce has about 870, one hotdog with bun about 650 mg. Those are the

ones that really add up quickly.

Lori:

We made homemade smoothies a bunch of times, mainly because it's fun for the

kids. I guess they like the grinding of the blender.

We'd use tangerines or madarin oranges (lower K than oranges), berries (all

kinds - blue, black, rasp, straw) and melon (not all together most of the time)

- they were awesome.

Lori if she is only sodium restricted then she should be able to eat any fruits

she wants. Smoothies are great and a fun way to " eat " fruit. I'm on 1500mg

sodium daily because my b/p is highly sensitive to any extra salt...once I got

used to eating very low sodium I found it was almost difficult to get the 1500mg

in daily. (I keep Frito's on hand for those days when I'm finding my sodium

intake very low.) :o)

As time goes on she may find a natural aversion to fruits that are very high

in potassium. Just let her listen to her body and go with what it likes and

dislikes. In our fast food rush of a world many of us have lost the ability to

know what our bodies are asking for. Just before my diagnosis I couldn't

stomach bananas or oranges any longer, I'd eat one and break out in a sweat and

within a few hours have severe stomach cramps. I'm not potassium restricted yet

but I still can't stomach those fruits.

Getting used to the diet is rough but trust me after the first few months it

will become second nature.

I would suggest talking to her Neph, and perhaps requesting talking to a

dietitian on the diet. I say that because I do not know what her labs are, so

it is impossible to say if she needs to restrict potassium.

I doubt her function is low enough that she is having problems with potassium,

but better to be safe than sorry. Many people with IgAN, myself included, have

to be extremely careful with potassium. Bananas and carrots are both high in

potassium along with potatoes, oranges and many other fruits and veggies that I

miss SO much. If she does not have restrictions, then smoothies with bananas or

berries etc would be good for her.

Hi Esther,

As long your son is not potassium restricted, yogurt should be fine.

Lori,

Assuming she's not potassium restricted, bananas are OK every once in a

while. In fact, almost everything is OK once in a while. 's big

sodium splurge this weekend was (don't laugh!) a Costco hotdog.

Chocolate is high in phosphorus, which is why we are often limited on

chocolate, and does have some potassium too, but not as much as carrots.

Carrots

have very high potassium with 233 mg in one carrot. One cup of carrot juice has

679 mg.

One tablespoon of chocolate syrup has 42 mg, and a 1.5 ounce bar of milk

chocolate has 169 mg so chocolate is better than carrots from a potassium

perspective.

For me, that means both are very special treat category.

Wow, .

I never knew (nor was I told) that carrots were high in potassium. I eat and ate

a ton of carrots - they are my favorite healthy snack. Whenever Matt and I are

playing, I'll always put the bag on the floor near us and we both snack on them.

Maybe it wasn't the chocolate that made my potasium shoot up before the tx!

Wow, I didn't know that about carrots. I will be limiting those.

Even though the doctor has said nothing about potassium I really

don't want her to have too much potassium in her diet.

Too little potassium is just as bad as too much, you know. I wouldn't

restrict anything unless my nephrologist or renal dietician tells me to.

I've said this before, but, unlike sodium, there's no benefit whatsoever in

limiting potassium unless it's necessary. It usually is not harmful to limit

sodium, simply because there's so much of it in the foods we eat that

cutting some out is not a problem. Not everybody with even advanced kidney

disease has a problem with potassium, so, it's really not an assumption we

can make on our own.

Hi,

You sound like you are doing your darnest to be doing the right thing -

however, please don't go overboard with diet changes without the doc's

advice. If you are in doubt about potassium, give him a call. Limiting

postassium in someone without potassium problems won't shift things one way

or another - and doing so causes needless deprivation. Do me a favor and

check with your doc on this one. For your own peace of mind, you might want

to know exactly what her potassium number is - and what a normal range for

her age would be.

I found some over lunch at my local gourmet grocery store. Brand is

Santa Barbara Olive Co., Plain Green. 95mg for 5 olives. Probably

not that easy to find and a little expensive $3 for 5 oz.

Your not going to believe it but they are Krogers Low-Sodium Spanish

Olives. It says on the back it has 65 mg of sodium per serving, a

serving size is 5 olives. For a 7 oz jar it was 1.99. I don't know

where you live, but if you don't have a Krogers in your town I will

galdly ship you some.

I will talk with her nephrologist on the 28th about it. Until he tells me I

will leave her diet the same. Thank you

I've never seen any low sodium olives - but I can't say I've looked for them

either. What do they taste like?
