Guest guest
The doctor called and said my son is slightly anemic. She wants him to go back on " Slow FE " supplements or any other supplement that contains 100mg of elemental iron. I see that Slow FE contains lactose. Any suggestions on what to use that would be SCD friendly? Thanks, 14 y.o. son w. UC, diagnosed 2005 SCD 2007

Any suggestions on what to use that would be SCD friendly? Iron supplements in general are not SCD friendly. However, additional folic acid and B12 can help with anemia. Liver, bison, and ostrich are helpful as far as anemia are concerned, especially if cooked in a cast iron pan with a spritz of lemon juice. When I had my cancer surgery, the surgeon said she would have two units of blood standing by. (Harry had donated blood for that purpose.) She also said I might need an iron supplement afterwards. I said I would do liver. (And you have no idea how much I dislike liver....) I did lots of red meats leading up to the surgery. And I needed neither a liver supplement nor the two units of blood! However, if you do go for the liver, just a cautionary note, and that is that too much organ meats can cause a gout attack. I believe Jodi is still aching about that one.... — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
