Hi Caroline..

One can have allergy drops (antigens) made in saline (basically like shots) just

have to be aware how much your son can tolerate as it caused a huge flare in me

taking the whole dosage.

Are you trying to preempt allergy season and start treating before it starts?

I had to use Patanol, Nasonex and Allegra (compounded) last year. I then used

the allergy drops. They have to be made using a blood test.

Thanks Jodi,

How are the allergy drops administered? Can you give me more info so I can talk

to his allergist about starting this ASAP.

Also, the Flonase nasal spray contains " illegals. " Do inhaled ingredients work

the same as ingested ingredients or is it alright for him to use a nasal spray?

Where do you get your stuff compounded?

I've been using Coastal compounding for the LDN, but don't know how

knowledgeable they are with the SCD stuff.

I'm lucky to live near life science pharmacy (i think they ship though) but my

doc just calls them in - everything I need in a compounded form - they can't

compound zrytec though :-(

Hi Caroline,

Basically the drops are antigens prepared (for SCD purposes) in a saline base.

I used to get these at the Hoffman center. It is like a shot (same thing just

different administration) where the antigens are in a small dropper bottle and

one puts drops in the mouth. The drops need to be stored in fridge. You could

probably discuss it with your allergist? Not sure. I don't know if Dr Kroner

is doing this? I will ask when I see her next week. I can try and get more

info for you- but in general the process takes a couple of weeks to get results

back from the blood testing and preparation of the antigens. So if you are

trying to preempt allergy season (when does he typically start getting bothered?

The weather is so crazy that my seasonal allergies have been all over the place)

So, it might not be the ideal solution for you this year if let's say he needs

to start next week or something.

I use Hopewell Pharmacy in NJ. They know all about SCD compliance;

http://www.hopewellrx.com/

Perhaps you can call them up and ask to speak to a pharmacist that knows about

SCD compliance and ask if his allergy shots can be compounded? It may be a long

shot but I would give it a try also ask your allergist where he gets the shots

prepared or which ingredients he uses and maybe call the allergists source and

see the ingredients that are used and ask for legal ones? I would get

Hopewell's opinion on this what would be in a typical shot and so on.

All of this is a lot of work and I understand. Elaine was adamant that it is ok

to use regular meds when necessary, so just keep that in mind.

How does he react to antihistamines? Could compounded Claritin or Allegra

(Fexofenadine) or Zurtec be an option? I find in short bouts it's ok for me but

over a couple of weeks it totally starts upsetting my bowel.

I personally think the drops are preferable to the antihistamines gut wise- I

just have to learn what amount I should be using for the drops as it put my

immune system into hyper drive last year and started a massive flare.

I think the Flonase is also ingesting illegals but if necessary and gives him

relief that should be the goal. Maybe Marilyn or Kim can tell us what they

think about Prescription Nasal sprays and illegals?

Also, maybe nasal sprays can be compounded? I never looked into that.

Has he ever tried using a Neti Pot? I hope to work up to this one day- I find

it a very painful and uncomfortable experience. A lot of people on the SCD

lists also swear by it too. My brother and Husband use a Neti twice a day. It

can be great for people with allergies.

I always have awful seasonal allergies. When I started SCD, I also started

eating a raw local honey, because I read that it can be helpful with fighting

allergies. So far, I haven't had any allergy problems. I live in Arizona, and

lot of things are blooming like crazy, so I'm hopeful that I'll stay symptom

free.

To make sure my bases are covered, I alternate between Desert Blossom, Orange

Blossom, and Mesquite honeys. I found them at local farmer's markets.

Jodi,

His allergist makes up the allergen himself, but he adds an " illegal " filler. I

think if I can tell him what filler is SCD legal, the allergist would be willing

to make a legal injection and Ian would be able to continue getting the shots,

which really had really helped him in years past. I just don't know what filler

is legal and would work.

I'll see if I can get a doc to write a script for compounded Clariton, which

he's also taken in the past.

I'm still wondering if eye drops and nose spray that contains " illegals "

adversely impact SCD diet. Anyone know about this?

Thanks

I do not think illegals could be an issue with injections, eye drops or nose

spray. They bypass digestion entirely and so should not cause problems.

I think there is no such thing as an illegal injection. Now, there are

preservatives and other things in injections that you may want to avoid, but

they aren't SCD illegal.

Hi ,

I don't agree about the Nasal Spray. It totally gets swallowed at a certain

point.

Oh yeah. Ew. LOL! OK, it doesn't apply for nasal spray then. But for injections

and eye drops, they should always be legal.
