Guest guest
Hi! I'm 48, female, and I've had hives for 7 years. I've heard that the majority of us are women, but there are men who get this curse, too. It really sucks so bad. (Sorry for the language.) And, basically, it's a big mystery to the doctors. There are some very definite things that can cause it, but once they rule those out, like in my case, they really don't know and you basically have to live on medications and pray a lot...LOL. We all search and search and some of us have been lucky and found the cause, some of us have other symptoms as well, which indicate other problems and other diseases in the mix. Then, there are those of us who just have plain old hives that are ruining our lives! I know I haven't helped you, but, when I found this group I realized I wasn't alone and that's been a big problem for a lot of us. People don't understand our disease and make a lot of stupid remarks. Please keep in touch. We share information about various medications and any insights we have. In my case, I seem to have become resistant to the antihistamines, no matter how many combinations I take, but I still take them because I don't know how much worse I'd be without them. I guess we can all be hopeful for the future...different medications, medical breakthroughs, or maybe they'll just go away. The doctors say there's hope for that, but does it ever happen? (Anyone, please answer that one.) Good luck. Tami (NJ)

Guest guest
Hi , I am also 33 and I have had hives for almost 2 years. My hives are under fairly good control with just Claritin right now, but I have been on many meds in the past like most on this list. You need to go and see a good allergist/immunologist to get you on the right combo of drugs. I hope your suffering eases soon. Believe me, we understand how it is!!! It seems as though many of us are female who had an onset in our 30's. But, of course there are some people who unfortunately have lived with the " curse " (as we frequently call it, LOL) for most of their lives. Please come to the site and post often, because we are here for you!!! Cara in Ohio
Guest guest
Hi Hivewoman, Sorry you are suffering so badly. Have you seen a doctor yet? Did he prescribe and meds for you? If so, what are you on? Many people on this forum are on the Z/Z combo which seems to be the popular meds, that would be Zyrtec and Zantac. Do you have any other symptoms? Have you ever tried any of the Aveeno products? They are wonderful for the itching. There are many wonderful people on this list and i'm sure that others will chime in to help. Take care and know you are not alone with this!! We all have been dealing with this and feel better just knowing there is someone to talk to that truly understands. Guest guest
I am a 39 yr old female, and have a condition called mastocytosis, which is what causes my hives. I have had this all my life, with a break in symptoms throughout my teen years and into my early 20's. I have had continuous symptoms for the past 14 years. The majority of hive sufferers are female, but there are plenty of guys out there with this too! Air hugs, Jackie Life is tough, but I'm tougher. ----Original Message Follows---- From: flaura5@... Guest guest
Where are you from? I am in Ft. Lauderdale and my surgeon has a support group once a month. When I first paid for the surgery, it was an additional $600 program fee and that covers all post-op visits, all classes offered, and monthly support groups. Your surgeon should have something that will help you, otherwise, look around your area for other support groups. Good Luck Mindi 277/175/125?? Guest guest
Hi guys, I am brand new here. My 14y/o daughter was diagnosed with Crohn's about a month ago. We just started the SCD this week. We are moving slowly into phase 1 and she is doing well with it. She is only on Flagyl right now. She had a really bad week last week and has lost an additional 7 lbs, taking her to 68 lbs. She weighed today for the first time in a week and it really floored me. We have a doctor appt tomorrow. She is doing well with the diet so far, but I am so scared of this weight loss..should she go on steroids or something to gain some weight? I am really wanting my baby to gain weight. She had lost to 75 but was at a stand still until she ate some grapes that really did a number on her (she has a stricture in her small bowel). I did not know until after she ate the grapes that she should not have them. I am rambling, I know, but I just need some advice about meds. I really wanted to do this with the diet alone, but with her weight so low I just don't know what to do. Can anyone please offer some advice? Guest guest
If something is life threatening, I would no doubt take the drugs for short term use and then transition to SCD while you take your daughter off the drugs. My son never had a stricture so I don't know how serious it can be (although it sounds urgent), but he was loosing a lot of weight and his digestive tract needed a break (and he had acute pancreatitis, so he wasn't going to eat much of anything anyway). We spent a week in the hospital, had lots of drugs, and I don't regret it because it got him back on " his feet " so he could transition to the diet and then got him off of the prednisone. Hope that helps. Best wishes, a www.comfybelly.com
