Prednisone is very hard on the stomach and digestive tract. Many people who

are on it are also on some kind of anti-ulcer drug. Maybe that's what you're

doctor was referring to.

below my ribcage since starting pred...for the life of me I can't remember

the pred and that it's easily resolved.

I'm just getting really concerned with everything that is going on,

she is taking so many medications. She is complaining about her

stomache, sweating at night, and have to go to the bathroom alot,

she is also really pale still.

Lori,

How long has she been taking the pred again? and Is she on daily doses or

every other day doses? The first few weeks I was on the high doses I was ash

white and looked like death warmed over. The night sweats are from the pred. I

had them until my dose was under 40mg daily. I used to soak my sheets nightly

and it's not fun at all. Getting up at night is also a pred thing, I could

hardly sleep for more than 4-5 hours at a time but then I was wiped out by

mid-afternoon and had to take a short nap.

Is she on a diuretic? That could be the cause of having to get up to go to

the bathroom a lot. It could also be...from the pred...(bet ya didn't see that

one coming). On high doses I was up at least 2-3 times a night to pee. Once

down under 40mg the night peeing let up a bit and now that I'm down to 7.5mg I

can sleep for 8-9 hours without having to get up at all.

The stomach pain could also be caused by stress....on the outside she may be

handling things o.k. but inside she may be a nervous wreck.

I just pulled out my notes in my b/p record book and the first 5 weeks on the

prednisone starting at 80mg and coming down to 60mg daily I have

written...nauseous/stomach pain. I was checked out for it a few times but they

never found anything but " it's the prednisone " .

I would still give her doctors a call about it and see what they want to do.

Being that she is pale and not eating they may want to check her out again.

Please remember this is temporary and you can pull thru this...we're here when

you need us.

I do think her body will get used to these medications after a while, and it

won't be as bad.

Having to go to the bathroom during the night is not a good thing, because

it's important for people to get a good night's sleep. How much is she

drinking after 6 PM? If you could limit that, it might help. The timing of

medications can also affect this. For example, it's not a good idea to take

a diuretic too late in the day.

Lori,

I am so sorry had to listen to the lady and got so upset. Sometimes

well-meaning people just don't think things out before they speak.

has so much to adjust to doesn't she?

Amy is right Lori, and I should have added to my earlier message that I had

two successful pregnancies with IgAN, and many of our other members have as

well.

She has been on the pred for almost 3 weeks, she is taking 80 mg a day plus 2

stomache pills 2x a day. Wow this is one heavy drug.... Her doctor is afraid

that she is getting an ucler.? I called the doctor here in town today and they

told me not to stress it that it takes a few weeks for the pred not to do this.

I am going to call her Kidney doctors on Monday. No really I going to call her

Kidney doctors tomorrow, someone is going to tell me something.

and I have talked about what is going on, but your right I really think

that she is keeping a lot of things inside. She hates the diet that she is on

and she hates taking all the meds. But I really don't have any idea how to help

her through that, on top of everything else we went to her sisters Christmas

Program last night and a lady that we all know was there and she started telling

that she has Kidney Problems and that they are no big deal, that she

really doesn't need to take meds for it and that I shouldn't be taking her blood

pressure, the only problem that she is going to have is when she is old enough

to want kids, she is not going to be able to, because it could kill her. I

wanted to just blast the stupid lady in the mouth. Needless to say I wasn't

very nice and my daughter started crying about what this loon told her. People

can be really stupid.

(((((((((Lori and )))))))))) If I was there I would have decked that woman

for you both! Yes for some people it's a very slow progressing disease and they

don't need to do much for it, but for others of us we DO need to watch our b/p

and our diet and our meds and our lifestyle....what a idiot that woman was.

Let me tell you that you are doing the right thing in taking her b/p daily to

make sure it stays under control. Also childbirth isn't totally out of the

About the ulcers, yes prednisone can cause them and you have to be careful about

the stomach pain due to that. I had to start on Nexium to control my nausea

caused by the pred. The other question I had for you is: Is she taking her

pred at the same time every day and with a FULL meal? I found that if I try to

take it with just a glass of soy milk or a bit of toast it would make me feel

very nauseous but if I take it will a full bowl of cereal and a glass of juice

I'm o.k. You really need that food in your stomach to soften the effects of the

drug on your stomach lining.

Please let know that she will be o.k. and that things will get better

I can deal with stupid people and I can deal with people who talk to much -

It amazes me what other people will say. I told her not to worry

about what was said, that she is not educated on your condition. I

also told her that in her life she will run into people that will

think they know everything and in reality they know nothing. That

some people talk just so that they can hear themselves talk.

I agree that the women is an idiot. As for the pred, yes she has been taking it

at the same time and with her snack and a glass of milk at night. What makes it

weird is that the only time she is having the pains is in the middle of the day

and later in the evening, it isn't an all day or night thing.

come to it...and remember there is always the adoption option.

Please let know that she will be o.k. and that things will get better

once she gets used to the routine. There are others of us out here that are

going thru the same things as she is and though it's hard it is worth it in the

end.

I agree that the women is an idiot. As for the pred, yes she has been taking it

at the same time and with her snack and a glass of milk at night. What makes it

weird is that the only time she is having the pains is in the middle of the day

and later in the evening, it isn't an all day or night thing.

If I was there I would have decked that woman for you both! Yes for some people

it's a very slow progressing disease and they don't need to do much for it, but

for others of us we DO need to watch our b/p and our diet and our meds and our

lifestyle....what a idiot that woman was.

Let me tell you that you are doing the right thing in taking her b/p daily to

make sure it stays under control. Also childbirth isn't totally out of the

question when she gets older and it won't kill her she'll just need to be under

a high risk OB's care throughout the pregnancy and make sure she isn't on any

drugs that could hurt the baby. Pregnancy can cause your b/p to rise and it can

cause you to spill more protein in the urine but that's why you have doctors

watching over you. Many of the women here have had successful pregnancies with

IgAN. There is a possibility that her kidney function will be down far enough

that the doctors tell her not to get pregnant but cross that bridge when you

come to it...and remember there is always the adoption option.

If it is intermittent abdominal pain, that would indicate that it is not

pancreatitis so I am not so concerned about her enzyme levels knowing that. I

do want her doctor to get to the bottom of it though.

That what I told the doctors this morning, she is going in tomorrow

afternoon. Now, today she hasn't had any abdominal pain. I don't

get it.

Well this is what I did, I went to the store and bought apples,

grapes, and carrots then I told her that my understanding was that

these foods were " free " (no sodium) so that she could eat as many as

she wanted. She ate two apples and gave me a kiss, she also told me

how much she hates this new life.
