Insufficient body stores of iron lead to a depleted RBC mass and, in turn,to a decreased hemoglobin(hgb)concentration(hypochromia)and decreasing oxygen-carrying capacity of blood. A common disease world wide, iron deficiency anemia affects 10% to 30% of the adult population of the United States. Causes and incidences;(appears multifactoral in the WLS patient for the following reasons) > Inadequate dietary intake or iron > Iron malabsorption,as in chronic diarrhea, partial or total gastrectomy, and malabsorption syndromes >Another less common reason in the WLS population-from blood loss secondary to drug -induced gastrointestinal bleeding (from anticoagulants<sometimes needed in post surgical patients..but not often....but if you had DIC....>,aspirin,steroids,NSAIDS(nonsteroidal antinflammatories..such as Advil,(Ibuprofen or Motrin) and others. < Gastrointestinal ulcers < Premenopausal women commonly have Iron deficiency anemia It is a gradual progression, many patients typically do not have symptoms initially They tend not to seek treatment until the anemia is severe (and I am not saying WLS patients here...just in general. because WLS patients will be closely monitored for this) Advanced signs due to the decrease the blood's oxygen carrying capacity or shortness of breath with exertion, fatigue, listlessness, pallor, inability to concentrate, irritability, headache and a suceptibility to infection. Decreased oxygen perfusion causes the heart to compensate with increased cardiac output and tachycardia(fast heart rate). Chronic loss= spoon shaped brittle nails, cornes of mouth crack, tongue smooth, trouble swallowing, numbness and tingling of the extremities and neuralgic pain. Blood studies to confirm-(serum iron, total iron-binding capacity, ferritin levels) and Bone marrow stores......the results of this can be misleading because of complicating factors, such as infection, pneumonia, blood transfusions, or iron supplements. Characteristic blood studies include: > Low hemoglobin levels > Low hematocrit levels < Low serum Iron, with high binding capacity < Low serum ferritin levels < low RBC count, with microcytic and hypochromic cells (in the early stages the RBC count may be normal) Long winded ......sorry I hope this can help someone RN/preop BMI 46.1 Pending insurance approval lap bypass hopeful

Guest guest
<< juice and veg juice? How can I get iron? >> , there are several fruit/veggie juices that will boost your iron intake: all berries, spinach, kale, beets & beet greens, parsley and combinations of those. If you use the green leaf veggies, try juicing them with half an apple for sweetening the taste. I got this info from my juicing books; the tastes are quite refreshing. Just remember that you can make any juice more palatable to those new to juicing by adding half an apple (or a whole apple) to sweeten the flavor of the final juice. If you'd rather use your blender to make smoothies, go right ahead...add some berries to your Shaklee protein drink and you've added iron. Dee in MI. Guest guest
<< JUICING QUEEN ON THE SCENE >> Aloha smoothie: one ripe banana, 8 ounces of pineapple juice (no sugar added), a few frozen strawberries. Blend and enjoy. It takes me about 90 minutes to drink this down...I keep one of those long ice tea spoons in the glass to keep things mixed while I sip. Dee in MI. I found that letting the pain get so bad or out of control only ended up making things worse for me. I hope your pain will end soon and you will be having better days again soon!
