ER... The witch nurse who thought I was trash this week

I went to the ER this week as you all know. (from food poisoning). The stupid

witch nurse that checked me in at triage asked what meds I was on... I told her

I have fibromyalgia and told her I am on vicodin. She looked at me and said

" so, how did that doctor diagnose fibromyalgia " ? She said it kind of snidely

and looked down her nose. I tried to explain.

Then later in the conversation, she told me " you need to stop taking your

vicodin " ... (because she thought that was the whole problem with my bowels, not

FOOD POISONING)... I said " NO, I dont need to stop taking it. Fibromyalgia is

a very painful illness " . She just looked at me like I was trash. She made me

wait in the ER for over an hour while I was in tears with pain in my belly from

food poisoning. She said before I went to the waiting area " there are a few

ahead of you " ... like as to say " well, if you are just a drug addict you need to

wait a while in pain to pay for it " ... I know that is what she thought. What a

witch.

Awww I am so sorry. After my ER experience this week, I understand

completely. I hope you are feeling better though! After this week, I

came to the conclusion that doctors and nurses who have never seen you

whould perhaps ponder the fact that another doctor prescribed you this

nd diagnosed you with this, perhaps because he had seen you more than

2 minutes and knew what would help, and perhaps you have lived in this

body long enough to know that you need help with pain, and mystically,

the nurse who cannot even spell my last name (its 6 letters, come on,

its not that hard..) might not know everything about me, and me

needing help doesnt make me a drug addict.

Prayers for you feeling better *hugz*

This is why when I go to the ER I try to NEVER say I have fibro or CFS or any of

the other 'non-diseases' I have. If they want a list of my meds, I tell them,

most of them are psych meds anyway, and as for the ones that aren't, the

majority are things like Miacalcin for osteo. The muscle relaxer and pain meds I

say are for 'intractable back pain'. End of story. I just don't even mention the

fibro et al if I can get away with it, and I usually can. I spent nearly a week

in hospital for pneumonia a year or so ago, and it never came up once. They just

checked with my regular doctors and gave me my regular meds...all of them, plus

the ones for the pneumonia. If I have to go while I'm taking Lyrica, I will just

say it's for neuropathy. You don't have to lie, just get creative with the

truth. I just refuse to be treated like you were at the ER, and this is the only

way to avoid it. This makes them focus on the problem at hand, rather than

wondering 'why' I'm really there. If you mention the word fibromyalgia, odds are

you will not be taken seriously no matter what you are there for. It's sad, but

true. It's just so much easier this way. I'd rather do a bit of 'creative

fudging' than bleed to death or something while they stand gaping at me.

That all being said, it still disgusts me the way they treated you. I would file

a complaint with the hospital board. These kinds of things have gone on long

enough. If we don't protest bad treatment, it won't end.

What did doc say? Nurse has no right to make any judgement or diagnosis, that is

docs responsibility, glad you defended yourself,I woukd have asked for nurse

manager or someone above her and reported her attitude.

That is absolutely horrible. I can't believe how bad & judgemental

people can really be. You really should escalate this. She will get

what's coming to her...someway....somehow.

Back in the day I worked for a well-known insurance company & I was

in the long-term disability dept...I decided who's claim was approved

or denied. There was a lady I worked with that if a packet came

across her desk with fibromyalgia she would automatically deny the

claim without even researching the condition or anything. It was just

horrible!

Hi Debra, I am so sorry you went through such a terrible time at the ER. I

sware I will never go to another one unless someone drags me there while I'm

having a heart attack or I've broken something.

What business is it of the nurse how your doctor dx you with fibromyalgia? Is

she checking up on the doctor? Did she want to go over it with the doctor to

make sure the right dx was determined? It is none of the nurse's business.

I can believe they kept you in chairs waiting because, hey, you are just a

milingerer.

I wish this had not happened to you. I'm glad you are better now. What a

terrible time you had.

Take care of yourself,

Marti

Marti, I know exactly what you mean. I've gone before with chest pains

and was told my the doctor " You need to get your fibromyalgia under

control. " Like I wasn't trying to do just that. Then my daughter had

to pass out in the ER and cause a panic by another patient (nurse

didn't even care) before she was seen. I really have no love for the

ER. It's sad too because I have 3 nurses in the family, one of which

worked ER for many years, and another in training. I think highly of

the medical profession just wish we all didn't always see the down side

of it.

Was your daughter OK? I can't believe the nurse would just ignore someone there

for medical treatment who just passed out!! It really makes one wonder why we

even bother GOING to hospital. The staff seem so cold and uninterested in us and

our 'petty' problems. I would be interested in knowing how many people die in

the ER while waiting in vain for help.

Thank you for the concern, Caroline. Maggie was fine. She had the

flu. She couldn't keep anything down and was so ill that I took her

in. I just wanted to make sure she was still getting enough fluids and

calories into her. She is sooooooo tiny I worry, I should add she was

about 10 at the time. I think it was dehydration or lack of calories

that made her pass out. It was bad though that they never found out.

She made a full recovery though so I guess we just have to hope this

doesn't happen again. I know my hubby would have them transfer us from

this hospital if we were ever admitted. It's just a bad one but our

only one for at least a hours drive and those aren't even very good

ones.

You know, there are always those times after the fact when you think of what

you should have said. In your case, I would have loved to have asked, “So,

where did you get your medical degree from and are you the doctor?” I just

don’t understand how these “medical helpers” can be so blinded by stupidity.
