Well, but isn't some of this idiosyncratic - like you reacting to carrots on the intro diet - and still not being able to eat many berries in summer, etc? Maybe you have a sensitivity to things that are canned for some reason, in the same way that MCS people are triggered by very particular things? Or maybe you are over that by now? Or at least less sensitive? It's been several years since you attempted it from what I gather. I've used them very sparingly (a handful or so) in the last 1 year 8.5 months and never noticed a reaction. I agree that they are not the way to go for beginners who are cleaning out their systems and just starting out. Mara
Guest guest
Well, but isn't some of this idiosyncratic - like you reacting to carrots on the intro diet - and still not being able to eat many berries in summer, etc? Absolutely it could be a personal issue -- but Elaine was completely adamant about no canned tomatoes, because this question came up often on the lists when she was on them. She also said that Dr. Haas was adamant about it when Elaine's daughter was on the diet. As a consequence, between personal reaction and the Word of the people who created and carried on this diet, I just don't trust canned tomatoes. Maybe you have a sensitivity to things that are canned for some reason, in the same way that MCS people are triggered by very particular things? I suppose it's marginally possible. However, there was one product -- canned mild chili peppers -- which I tried in those harrowing months after Hurricane Katrina, when I'd lost every speck of my carefully frozen foods, which was commercial, and to which I did not react. (Did not have the money to purchase shipped-in frozen chili peppers, and had no source of fresh ones, and I was desperate for a bowl of chili.) Of course, I don't used mild chili peppers nearly as often as I would use canned tomatoes. I have also used tomatoes bottled by a local farmer (tomatoes and salt) and did not react. Or maybe you are over that by now? Or at least less sensitive? It's been several years since you attempted it from what I gather. Yes, the Muir Glen escapade was in 2004 -- and I'd only been SCD three years at that point. And was still reacting to an awful lot of things in any kind of quantity. I've used them very sparingly (a handful or so) in the last 1 year 8.5 months and never noticed a reaction. <wry grin> The problem there is defining in a quantitative manner, what " sparingly " actually means. Given a chance, I can prepare meals for a week, all of which could involve canned tomatoes! Chili, lasagna, shrimp Creole, Egg plant Parmesan Napoleon, soft tacos, burritoes, and on and on.... good thing I don't react to cooked tomatoes! I agree that they are not the way to go for beginners who are cleaning out their systems and just starting out. Precisely -- and it is at the beginning, when the amount of food preparation feels so totally overwhelming that people are most likely to want short cuts like purchased processed tomatoes. It is also at this point that they are most vulnerable to anything which may be in those commercially processed foods. That's why I feel compelled to warn people over, and over and over about them! — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
