My name is Sue. I have had a life of temporary weight losses. My doctor here in Wisconsin has sent quite a few patients to Dr. Rutledge and is very impressed with the results. My insurance has an obesity exclusion clause. This has caused me nothing but trouble for authorization for gastric procedures in the past. Everytime I was denied a little bit of my hope faded. That I have been approved for gastric bypass surgery. The letter said, I will receive an appointment in 3 months. I have questions. 1.What happens if you over eat? Will the stapes come out? do you have to run to the bathroom? Can you still eat any food you want? Did anyone have the surgery in Richmond? Do you have to go too the support groups? This group has been an invaluable source of support and information for me. I hope that it proves the same for you. " What happens if you over eat? " Generally, you will feel very uncomfortable. Lots of folks say that if they eat too much, it just comes right back. I've only up-chucked once - when I drank too much, too fast. A couple of other times, I wished that it had come back - I was very uncomfortable, just felt like I'd swallowed a rock. " Will the staples come out? " I have heard of a few people who have had staple line disruptions, but it seems to have nothing to do with what they were eating. A staple line disruption is one of the possible complications - but, I'm pretty sure that it is not a common occurance. " Do you have to run to the bathroom? " If you mean " is a diarrhea a problem? " - then, I'd say no, not with the RNY. I have a friend who had a duodenal switch and it is much more of a problem with that surgery. If you are referring to needing to vomit - then, well, maybe. I haven't really had that problem. " Can you still eat any food you want? " Truthfully, I'd have to say - no, you can't. Shortly out of surgery, what you can eat will be really limited. Further out, some foods are likely to cause you distress, at least at first. A significant percentage of post-op will dump if they consume too much sugar. Some folks find that they cannot tolerate some foods even years later. Even if you can tolerate all foods, you may also find that you need to restrict some foods if you want to get the best results from this process. Many of us have " trigger " foods that lead to cravings and old, distructive eating patterns - and it is highly advisable to avoid those foods. As with just about everything involved with this surgery - everyone is different, but it is a good idea to be prepared to make some serious adjustments to what and how you eat. " Did anyone have the surgery in Richmond? " I did. My surgeon was Dr. Baggs. I was very impressed with the care that I received there. " Did you have to go to the support groups? " I am not sure what is being required these days. When I was pre-op, I had to attend an Orientation meeting, but that was it. After surgery, you will be expected to attend Post-Op Classes once a month for six months. Required or not, I strongly recommend finding a support group that fits your schedule and that you attend as regularly as you can. I am convinced that attending an in-person support group is very important to long-term success. An unfortunate truth about this surgery is that it is not magic and many of us could regain weight if we are not careful. Attending a support group can help keep one on course and can be especially helpful if one is struggling. This is just my opinion - but I intend to use whatever support I can garner to stay on track and hope to make this a life-long commitment. Hope you don't mind long-winded replies. Wow! they ask you to lose 20% of your weight before surgery!?! Sorry if I seem to be just full of questions. I like your analogy to having a baby. You're right . . . no matter how well prepared you think you are for surgery and life after surgery, living it is much more than you can really be prepared for, but all that preparation really does help us muddle through. This is a wonderful group of really caring, supportive and informative folks. They have been of incalculable help to me in my journey. Has your pcp already submitted your referral? It only took a couple of weeks for me to get my approval letter, but things may have changed a bit since then. It has only been a bit over a year since my pcp referred me, but lots more folks seem to be applying for surgery these days and Kaiser seems to be a bit slower as a result. Perhaps someone with more recent experience can give you a better idea of the current timeframes. Please, feel free to ask any questions that come to mind, express any concerns and celebrate any hurdles passed or milestones reached. I look forward to getting to know you.
