I haven't donated blood since before surgery because the last 2 times I tried at my community blood bank, my blood wasn't beefy enough. The hematocrit (percentage of blood volume that's red cells) was only 37, and the cutoff is 38. I like to donate blood because I've given about 46,000 transfusions of various blood products in my nursing career and I know how beneficial blood transfusions are. Yes, this is a pitch! Summer's coming... we need blood! Anyway, I went in expecting to fail again. I passed! My hematocrit was 39!!!! This is huge, because even in my fat days, the highest I ever saw my crit go was 38! I am shocked, and totally jazzed. Also, my period seems to have returned on a regular basis. These two events tell me that I'm really healthy, despite being at a low goal weight.
