Guest guest
Hi Eileen, *Certain* dairy is allowed on the SCD. Like aged cheeses or dairy that we ferment. Butter is basically butter fat, proteins from the milk and water. So it is usually not a problem. If butter is an issue for you (it is for me) than you can eat ghee or clarified butter which is strictly the butter fat. Dairy is a common food allergen. There are many theories out there that humans should not be eating any dairy in the first place as we cannot physically digest it. I cut dairy out on my own and added in Ghee, I felt immediately better. I think Mara also cut dairy out and I think she is using Ghee as well. I plan on reintroducing SCD yogurt at a certain point because when I was eating the Yogurt it was when I was feeling at my best. I feel for me it is truly a medicine and that the good bacteria actually reached my small intestine. All of this takes time and it is interlocked into the concept of different stages of healing. I think it would be wise for you to cut the Yogurt out and see how you feel. Also, pay attention to which probiotic you may be using as the one from Lucy's is dairy derived. Guest guest
Ghee from what I've heard of the process is cooking the butter and skimming off the top - Jodi can you give me directions again- thought I saved them - thanks eileen any clue on how long you can eat yogurt for if not eating if for the bacteria fairies ??? I know they're dead!! LOL > > I liked yogurt but I'm not certain it likes me. I'm new to this diet and buying a yogurt maker at this point seems like a big investment. I have heard several people say it comes out runny. I can't think of anything less appetizing than runny yogurt. Buy the way, what in the world is Ghee. . > > > > > ________________________________ > > To: BTVC-SCD > Sent: Saturday, March 7, 2009 3:34:25 PM > Subject: Re: yogurt/butter > > > Hi Eileen, > > *Certain* dairy is allowed on the SCD. Guest guest
Eileen Butter consists of butterfat, water and milk proteins (casein). Most butters are about 80% to 85% fat. Cultured butter is made from fermented cream. Butter is OK to use while on SCD. IF your body tolerates fats, that is. My body doesn't tolerate dairy (no yogurt, no cheese) but it has no problems with butter. But my upper GI doesn't tolerate fats, so I have to be careful with how much butter I consume at one meal, and how often I have it over a week's period. Ghee is also an option, as it is clarified butter, meaning most of the water and milk solids are removed. Many digestions handle ghee more easily than butter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butter Kim M. SCD 5 years
