Guest guest
I am 45 and have had swollen feet/eyelids for about ten years. I was diagnosed with IgA only this year and started taking 25 mg Prednisone in June, continuing for 3 months and then slowly tapering down to 5 mg. Proteinuria currently 3.5 g, down from 6; GFR 25%. I have had frequent inflammations of the eye, usually one but sometimes both. I am told that steroids can provoke eye infections, but can this also be due to the disease? Guest guest
It's hard to say what is and what isn't directly associated with IgAN. There are some things that might be, but we don't really know for sure. I was never on prednisone myself, but I was always prone to eye infections and inflammations, plus, swollen, itchy eyelids. Of course, swollen eyelids are an effect of chronic renal insufficiency, but many people who are diagnosed with IgAN don't really have any significant renal insufficiency yet. Ironically, you suspect steroids, but many times, the only thing that would clear up my eye inflammations were steroid eye drops. I don't know if my eye problems were IgAN-related. They were probably more related to my allergies. Steroids like prednisone actually help with allergies. Pierre RE: eye problems > > I am 45 and have had swollen feet/eyelids for about ten years. Guest guest
Hi Mark, Eye problems (other than the swollen eyelids due to edema) are not generally related to IgAN. Since it usually occurs in one eye only also suggests that it's not IgAN related. Is is possible that what you are having is a sty or conjunctivitis? Both of these can recur if the infection doesn't go away completely. had problems with lingering infections and injuries not healing (we're only now making real headway with his foot problems) which I always chalked up to pred. Talk to your doc. Cy RE: eye problems > > I am 45 and have had swollen feet/eyelids for about ten years. Guest guest
Mark: IgA nephropathy can co-exist alongside some rheumatological disorders, such as different forms of arthritis. Arthritis can cause eye inflammation. Have you had blood work testing you for rheumatoid factor, CRP, sed rate, and HLA-B27? It might not be a bad idea to make sure that isn't the cause of your eye problems. Just my 2 cents worth! , mom to Rob, Alport syndrome and Juvenile Ankylosing Spondylitis (a form of arthritis)
Guest guest
In my experience, no matter what's causing them, eye problems are worth addressing with an opthalmologist. Even just having high blood pressure should prompt a visit to an eye doctor maybe once a year or every couple of years. Damage from high blood pressure tends to affect the eyes before any other organ. Guest guest
- Always I found you as an enthusiastic person from all your posts. I am happy and Thankful to be part of this msg board to meet people like you. Though you have been taking pred since a long time, I have not heard complaints from you despite with all the side effects you have. Something which I have to learn to accept it for Manju, which I am finding it hard. I am learning ... but slowly Thanks for telling about how you are handling your vision problems, and yes we are visiting opthamologist this week, Aruna --- Cohen wrote: > Aruna: > > No Problem (both the note and the cataract). Guest guest
Aruna: Thank you for the kind words. It's kind of funny - I think we (as patients) have an easier time dealing with this than the non-patient members of our families. My wife cried much more than I did when we first talked about the transplant, and before that she was always worried. Well, maybe that applies to the women family members more (not trying to be sexist, I just think it's a maternal thing, guys, we throw some duct tape on it and it's good to go). prm wrote: - Always I found you as an enthusiastic person from all your posts.
