Guest guest
....., Rita, Amy, Bonnie, Aruna/Manju and (I think I got everyone) - all of you inspire me!! : D I was able to sleep in lots today (7.5 hours of sleep vs. the usual 4 - 6 hrs), but unfortunately, did not do my Pilates, as Kris and I were rushing around today - he is flying to Switzerland as I speak, on a wk long business trip. However, I am very motivated to do Pilates tomorrow am. I'm going to aim for 3x this week...I hope eventually to do some pilates every morning before I go to work! My only saving grace is my dancing, which is 2-3x a week. I don't know how I will keep that up during the holidays however, our classes end after this week! But knowing that all of you are exercising, I will too! : ) Sophia
Guest guest
Hi Sophia, Dance counts as exercise!!! If you are dancing 2-3 times a week, you are already doing great. I hope your husband has a great trip to Switzerland. By the way, how in the world do you manage on 4-6 hours of sleep? I really need 9 hours a night but can get by with 8. And less and I am really hurting. Guest guest
Can I pose a silly question to the group, please?? I have seen and heard alot about excercising, but have a strange question!! When I was first diagnosed with IGAN just a couple of weeks ago, I asked my doctor about going to the chiropractor because of my lower back pain, well, I am now sure that the majority of it the 'flank pain' that you all have discussed quite a bit, however, she told me that I could go to a chiropractor but no 'sharp turns'. This lead me to be a bit concerned about some movements and all... can anyone help me??? I am sure that walking and all would be fine excercise, but the only time that I have to do that stuff is late in the evening when it is already dark here and I don't like to go out alone in the dark, and I don't like to have my kids out after dark either... not to mention I don't like to leave them home alone after dark... what kind of excercise am I supposed to be doing???? Can anyone help me here??? Also, I see talk of amounts of sleep... I also have 'Chronic Fatigue Syndrome' and 'Hashimoto's Disease'.... do these things go along with IGAN or am I just cursed with too many things?? My neph did tell me that I need to crawl up a different family tree and fall out cause there are so many things in my history!! I do have an aunt, also, who died at the age of 29 due to what was then called just 'malignant hypertension' that ended up destroying her kidneys... is that what I have going on??? I am so confused... lol Any answers to any and/or all questions would be so appreciated!!!! Thanks, Kris Re: To all those out there determined to exercise.... Hi Sophia, Dance counts as exercise!!! Guest guest
Kris, I see a chiropractor regularly, just let them know you have kidney disease and there are a few things they might avoid doing. My treatments haven't changed any since my diagnosis, though most of my adjustments take place between my shoulder blades. As for exercising, I go to Curves 3 times a week and walk on my treadmill when I can. My neph gave the rundown of low impact type exercises....Pliates is good, TaiChi, Curves workouts are low impact since they use hydraulics, swimming, walking, biking, resistance bands, or yoga (some positions shouldn't be done as they put strain on the low back), basically anything that is weight bearing but low impact. Weight training should be cleared with your neph first as it will raise your b/p while you are working out with the weights. If your b/p is running high or uncontrolled they may want you to hold off on weights. I'm sorry to hear about your aunt...that is young! I don't have answers to your disease connection questions...I hope someone else here can address those for you. Amy G. Re: To all those out there determined to exercise.... Guest guest
You know Kris, it's only been during the past 30 years that they have been able to actually identify many kidney diseases. Before that, they were mostly all lumped together, assuming they were able to diagnose it at all. For example, someone who today we know has IgAN would have simply been said to have chronic glomerulonephritis, or earlier, they might have said " Bright's disease " . If it was that long ago, it's possible that your aunt's " malignant hypertension " was caused by an undiagnosed kidney disease. Even today, if kidney diseases is only diagnosed very late when it's already very advanced, even a biopsy can't tell what it is. So, in the past, it might have been hard to say which came first, the kidney failure or the hypertension. Malignant hypertension is something that could destroy kidneys on its own, or it could be caused as part of kidney disease. Before effective BP meds started coming along, there wasn't too much they could do for severe hypertension, except put people on salt restriction, relaxation and hope for the best. Many of the meds we take today weren't even around until the 1980 and 90's. Older meds go back to the 70's and some to the 60's, a few to the 50's, but some of the early meds had severe side effects. So, sometimes hypertension couldn't be treated and it became " malignant hypertension " . This term just means that the BP is so high that it immediately damages various organs like the kidneys, eyes, heart, brain. Just over 50 years ago, President Roosevelt died of the complications from severe hypertension. There's always a way to exercise, and there is usually no reason not to exercise moderately. Obviously, walking is a good one. Mall walking is safe if you don't want to go out in the dark. Going up and down stairs in your own house (or even just a cheap stepping stool). So is swimming, if there's a pool around. One of the very first exercises that were recommended to me by my second neph years ago is a stationary exercycle. You can do that at home, at any time of the day really, and you don't have to worry about being run over by speeding cars, nor the weather. Basic exercycles don't really cost much, especially if you can find a used one. You really don't need one with all the fancy doodads on it, like computer controls with interval programs and the like. Handlebars, pedals and a way to adjust the tension. That's all. A treadmill is good too, but cheap ones aren't very good, and expensive ones are very expensive compared to an exercycle. I don't know anything about the other conditions you have, and I have no knowledge as to whether they are connected to IgAN. Your doctor's comment about " sharp turns " and your chiropractor was probably just reflective of the controversy of some chiropractic procedures. A number of people who have had some procedures like that done in their neck area have died of a stroke. So, I'm guessing that's what your doctor was referring to, not exercise. But, if you're in doubt, do ask your doctor. In fact, you absolutely should specifically ask your doctor about exercise before you start any. Depending on your situation, some doctors might want to schedule you for a heart stress test. Guest guest
Thank you so much for your help!! I do have an excercycle... I might have to start using that... I also have stairs in my house... maybe I should try that... I have gotten pain in my knees with the weight gain due to the thyroid condition... do you think I will cause them to be worse or improve them??? Any ideas??? However, last time I went to the dr. I was down by 10 pounds!! The much higher bp meds has really taken away my appetite!!! That's a good thing... believe me, I'm not complaining!!!! LOL We don't have any malls in my hometown... so I can't do the mallwalking... that would be fun I think!! But again, I live in Montana and there is a long way between anything... the nearest town to me that has a mall is 150 miles... so that's not too probable.. huh?!?!!? I have also read alot coming through the group about the spontaneous bruising... I've been having strange spontaneous bruising going on for 9 years or more... do you suppose I have had this kidney thing for that long and it just wasn't diagnosed yet? I know that 2 years ago was when the blood and proteins first showed up in my urine and it really became a concern about 4 or 5 months ago just after I had a virus.... I'm just wondering if it is possible that I've had this this long??? Thanks for any and all answers, opinions, or suggestions!!! Hugs, Kris Re: To all those out there determined to exercise.... > > Can I pose a silly question to the group, please?? I have seen and heard alot about excercising, but have > a strange question!! Guest guest
Hi , Thanks, yes dancing is great, but since being on the pred, my gut sticks out and what's worse, it seems to roll over the waistband in the pants/skirts that I wear. = : O Although, I guess it's not so bad these days, since I am tapering. But I would like to (and I think I really need to) do some ab- tightening exercise: hence the pilates. Stress in my volunteer work and the prednisone makes you do an amazing amount of things on little sleep...however, I don't manage it at all. I start to get sick after a while...then I know I have to slow down and get lotsa sleep. So, I really should get a good nite's rest. Sophia > Hi Sophia, > > Dance counts as exercise!!! Guest guest
Hi Kris, First, my condolences on your aunt. I am so sorry you lost her at such a young age. That is always so hard. I feel very bad that you also have chronic fatigue and Hashimoto's. I am familiar with Chronic fatigue, but not Hashimotos. I have a good friend who is in my Bible Study who has chronic fatigue and so I know how difficult that can be. I am so sorry you have to deal with those on top of IgAN. I have never heard a recommendation about sharp turns. Your internal organs are very well protected. The only exercise that I know is questionable is weight lifting and only because it can raise your BP. If you have a library you have access to, you can try a video tape. Sophia does Pilates, and I do too on some of my off running days. It is convenient to pop in a tape or a DVD and have a good hour long work out. Also, if you have cable, they usually have a fitness channel in the progr amming and you can tune in to a program there. Hope these suggestions help on the exercise.
