Subject: progress...?

Hi There,

The first 2.5 weeks I started to feel a lot better loose stools all cleared up

and gut pain gone mostly. Now I have gut pain and hardly any bowel activity.

Woke up in the night with a terrible gut ache the other night. Can someone tell

me if this is something that often happens?

Maybe I am eating too much dairy or too much meat...is it possible to eat too

many cooked veggies and get this result? I am eating dry curds, organic beef,

turkey carrot soup, steamed broc, asparagus, mushrooms, bok choy, eggs, cheddar

and havarti cheeses, cooked pears and cherries, fresh squeezed grapefruit juice

and lemon juice every few days, welches grape juice and black cherry juice,

unpasteurized honey, olive oil.

Eating nut flour seems to help. I feel highly deficient in grain fibres and my

regular brown rice process but am enduring. I have not yet been able to make

the yogurt but will get what I need today to do so.

Have read the book cover to cover, except the autism part, which I will get to.

Thanks for insights, in advance.

What some people can tolerate others can’t. I know if I were

eating much of what you’re eating I’d be in trouble. My system can’t tolerate

broccoli, bok choy, grape juice, black cherry juice, unpasteurized honey (regular

honey is ok for me), and I have to be very careful about cheese curds. __.

What I’m noticing lately is that a lot of people on the SCD are

eating high levels of fruit carbs. Though Elaine never said that was bad, my

reading and researching in a number of sources in the last months is convincing

me that high levels of carbs of any kind is just not a good idea, but

especially eating much of the particularly sweet fruits like bananas, pineapple,

grapes, strawberries and some types of apples (like Delicious, e.g.). Fruit

carbs, eaten in large quantities or in individual fruits that have large

quantities, won’t get digested quickly enough to prevent bad bacteria from

feeding on them. And drying (or reducing to compote) concentrates those

sugars, as someone else has already pointed out.

If anyone’s (still) having SCD problems and is eating a lot of the

naturally sweet fruits, you might want to try cutting back on it to see it that

helps. I know it has helped me.

Thank you n.

If you don't mind, would you tell me what you eat so I have some better idea of

what might work? I feel I am eating way too much meat and cheese, eggs, curds

but am hungry if I dont. On the other hand, as far as carbs go, never before in

my life have I been able to eat honey without having an almost instant yeast

infection. On SCD, it doesn't happen, and my tongue is looking much healthier

too...not so much white. This tells me that something good is happening and I

suspect the starches were triggering that problem.

I have a very fast metabolism and so need to make sure I eat enough to sustain

my blood sugar. Do you include honey in that fruit sugar concept? When you say "

in trouble " does that mean constipation? ...or diarrhea? It seems to me the more

cooked veg a person would eat, the better digestion one would have. Maybe not.

Thanks for the insight!

I'm a newby. But noticed right away that I was getting constipated. I backed off on some of the dairy and am going to try more of the nut flour recipes. By the way, the muffins are great. I added bananas since they tend to agree with me. But I'm not a person who eats lots of vegs or fruits at this point. I'm easing into it. I am not a meat eater either. I guess I always thought that too much cheese and dairy can cause problems for me. Anyone else? .To: BTVC-SCD Sent: Wednesday, March 4, 2009 10:17:00 AMSubject: progress...?

Thanks. I expect this is it. I am a huge meat/chicken/fish, steamed veggie and

brown rice person for a few years now, which worked great for a while...and now

I am having trouble with the limitation of what to eat. I am presently baking

mussings - zucchini- and just made cheese bread. We'll see what happens. Bananas

are not agreeing with me, even the really really ripe ones.

Thanks fo rthe input. I appreciate it!

infection. On SCD, it doesn't happen, and my tongue is looking much healthier

suspect the starches were triggering that problem.

(Hi Robyn)

I also feel at times like I’m eating too much meat and eggs (I

don’t eat much cheese). But I’m not sure why I feel that way, as it that does

fill me up and “sticks to one’s ribs,” as they say. And it combats my sugar

cravings, which I’m having more frequently lately. (Clearly my body doesn’t

like being deprived of sugar – though I was not a huge carb eater before I went

on this diet.)

I’m perhaps not eating enough vegetables yet. I can butternut

squash, carrots, green beans, asparagus (I’ve been too lazy to make cheese

sauce for it, but obviously that would be an option, spinach (I hand-snip the

stems, as I find them to fibery); cooked frozen peas don’t go down quite as

well (they’re too sweet for me, I think.) I’ve just added fresh salad and

that seems to be working for me: blends of leaf lettuces, spinach leaves,

finely grated carrot. I have used some reduced tomato juice made into sauce,

but find the smell of it revolting when even a little honey is added to it. So

much for my home-made BBQ sauce! I can’t drink tomato juice; too acidic.

Re: meats, I eat chicken, turkey, pork (chops and loin), legal

sausage, hamburger (sometimes made into meatloaf).

I’m going to cut out the yogurt for a while and take those strains

of acidophilus in tablet form, as I think I may be reacting to milk protein. I

hope I’m wrong.

I do find this all boring at times. I need to get an SCD

cookbook, which I don’t have at this point. But, as others have said, cooking

right takes a fair bit of time, and I’m not feeling terribly creative or

energetic in that department these days (though I do like to cook and have been

told I’m normally a fairly creative cook).

Re: the sources I’ve read re: the possibility of getting too

much sugar in fruit. I can’t recall anything specifically about honey, but I

assume it would apply, since the total carbs being consumed, as well as

types of carbs, may be an issue for a lot of people with gut

problems.

I don’t know that any of this is helpful to you. Adapting to

this diet is such an individual thing, just as individuals react quite

differently to their CD or UC.

n

I have a very fast metabolism and so need to make

sure I eat enough to sustain my blood sugar. Do you include honey in that fruit

sugar concept? When you say " in trouble " does that mean

constipation? ...or diarrhea? It seems to me the more cooked veg a person would

eat, the better digestion one would have. Maybe not.
