Well done on the A1C. Sorry to hear that the UTI is getting you

down. Do you take anything as a preventative? Cranberry & Blueberry

are known to assist UT health. Maybe worth a look if you're not

taking such things already.

I've never had this kind of constant UTI problem until after I went months

with 385+ sugar readings. Even with the numbers under control, I tend to

have constant trouble which is leading the doctor to suspect neuropathy of

the bladder. Yippee.... She said we're going to do urine tests at every

checkup to track and then discuss treatment options if it's looking like it

is neuropathy of the bladder. I'm not sure what the options for treatment

for that are at the moment. I've not researched it yet. Basically, what

happens with neuropathy of the bladder is that you can't feel whether or not

your bladder is totally empty. So you end up with urine sitting in there

stagnating and causing infections. I drink a good bit of water and cranberry

juice. I also eat a lot of blueberries, so I wouldn't think I would be

having so much trouble. The doc told me it's just a part of being diabetic

in some cases along with the increased risk of yeast and other fungus

deciding any patch of slightly damp skin you may have (toes, belly button,

arm pits, groin, etc) is a great new home.

What is A1C? The doctor said something about 7.3 and I wasn't quite sure

what that meant. Just something about showing that my sugar had been up

sometime doing the last three months.

An A1c test is a blood test that shows what your bg's (blood glucose/blood

sugar) has been running for the past 2-3 months.

Here is a link from the Joslin Diabetes Center that has more information on

the A1c test. Also has other information about daily testing.

Are you taking meds for your cholesterol? I had reoccuring UTIs

when I was taking Lipitor. I did some research and cut down the

dose myself and after my 3rd round of antibiotics and I didn't have

another on that dose. At my last check I expained this to my MD and

he was skeptical (and unhappy I 1/2'd my med dose). I agreed to go

full dose just to make my point and sure enough...UTI within 5

days. I am now taking Zocor without any UTI issues (about 5 months

now). I have also heard others having trouble with joint pain while

taking cholesterol meds.

Good luck. Shari

Hi Shari,

Have you tried garlic? Nature's cholestrol controller might be a

healthier option than Zocor/Lipitor unless you have allergy problems.

>>Are you taking meds for your cholesterol?>>

I take Zocor for my cholesterol and have been taking it a long while. I

think I started it about a year before the assumed window of time where my

hypoglycemia flipped into diabetes. In all that time, I had no problems with

UTIs. It's only since the bloodsugar went haywire and I've been diagnosed

with diabetes that the urinalysis nearly always comes up " dirty " . Apparently

the doc was expecting this as she has done urinalysis before every checkup

since she diagnosed.

I just had to jump in here. I have bladder infections every two months.

The doctor had me take cranberry pills all day and before went to bed

and I also had to take a vitamin C before bed. Nothing worked. Now he

has me on a low grade antibiotic and I haven't had an infection in the

last six months. It feels like a miracle. I was so sick and tired of

getting them and now they are gone!

The

bad news is I'm on antibiotics for UTI AGAIN *groan* (I'm SO sick of

and the next round of lab work gets dedicated to looking for signs of

rheumatoid arthritis and lupus thanks to two weeks straight of

excruciating., burning pain in every joint of my body. Bad thing is,

BOTH of

those ailments have cropped up in women on both sides of the family. So

I'm

Hi Winifred,

Great news. Sounds like you needed the anitbiotics to kill the bugs

once and for all. The cranberry is probably a good supplement to

keep up as a preventative now the bugs have been exterminated ;)
