My solution for making yoghurt has been to employ an electric countertop food

warming tray. It is over 30 years old (a wedding gift!) but works like a charm.

The surface measures approx. 20x14 inches. I set the tray up on the countertop

in a corner of my kitchen which is surrounded by ceramic tile which provides

ambient heat. Rather than set the yogurt directly on top of the glass top, I

buffer with a large wire rack which covers the entire surface, upon which I

place a regular 2 litre glass pyrex measuring cup of yoghurt (I often make 2 or

3 or 4 litres at a time - the tray is large enough to accommodate two or three

large pyrex). The whole assembly is cocooned with several layers of towels

which drape to the surface of the counter. The heat control is adjustable (sort

of like the dimmer switch others are using), and I have determined the exact

setting which keeps the temperature stable at 108 degrees.

I did a quick check on the internet and found that Broil King has such a unit

for $60.99. You might find something similar cheaper if this interests you.
