My First Annual " Inspection "

Hi All:

Well, 364 days ago, I had my transplant, and 361 days ago I left the hospital

with a creatinine of 1.3. I had bi-monthly appointment (this one is for my

annual), and had a creatinine of.........................

drumroll please.............

1.3!

Yeah! I am so excited. And to top it all off, my magnesium was 1.8! As the

coordinator I spoke to said, " Your labs are perfect. Right down the middle. "

Double Yeah!

Due to the leap year, my kidne-versary will be 366 days from transplant, so

our whole family will be celebrating this Thursday, 12/9, the actual tx day. I

cannot believe it has been a whole year (almost). I hope for two things in the

coming year: those in need of kidneys get them ASAP; and those who are stable

remain that way.

Congratulations ! I don't post often, but I try to read all the posts

and respond to as many as my time allows me too. That sounds awesome! My 9

year old daughter has IGAN, been on steroids since March two rounds of

cytoxin and various other pills and vitamins. We're no where near that

stage and the good Lord willing won't be, but it is so great that you got

your transplant and your life is so great! That gives me great hope if in

twenty or so years, the worst case scenario happens. Hopefully, like in a

lot of the posts I've read, not all cases end in ESRD. God bless you and I

hope that next year and the years to come are even more happy!

Oh ,

This absolutely makes my day. We'll be sure to hoist a glass for you and Barbara

on this coast. It's hard to believe it has really been a year.

Wow, that's pretty good news for you ! I still find it hard to believe

it's been a year already since your transplant. It's amazing how time flies.

If your new kidney is working that well after a year, you're in pretty good

shape for the long haul.

Tara:

Thanks, and I hope that medicine can find a way to stop IgAN so that Allie never

needs to even think about a transplant, and can live a normal life.

A kidney from a live donor is better because it comes straight from the

donor to the recipient. A cadaveric donor has to be transported to you, and

by the time you get it, it can have spent many hours on ice in a portable

plastic cooler. So, it's just not in as good a shape because it has been

" dead " for a while.

If it's a live RELATED transplant, even better because less medication will

be needed (good match), and the anti-rejection meds themselves are somewhat

nephrotoxic.

I can't say I pray for anyone to become brain dead so I can get a kidney.

But, the people who have the misfortune to die will die whether I get their

kidney or not... that's the way I look at it. If the kidney is good enough

to transplant, if I don't get it, someone else will. Plus, it's not just the

two kidneys. Other people will benefit from other organs from the same

donor. It helps many people.

Mind you, sometimes when I see a motorcycle rush by at break-neck speed, I

think maybe I'll be seeing the guy's kidney later.

This is a misconception though. The majority of cadaver kidneys come from

people who have had some kind of brain event, like an aneurysm, not from

motorcycle accidents.

Great points, Pierre. One thing that I had heard in a face-to-face support group

meeting was that the waiting time for organs was shorter in states with a lower

age for driving. Now that fact makes me a little sad...

I am hoping for a preemptive transplant to Bart. I agree with you that the

thought of someone's life ending to give me an organ is pretty humbling isn't

it?

The only thing that brought me comfort is a verse in Psalms 139 that says all

of our days are numbered before one of them comes to pass, so God already

knows how many days each of us will have. My daughter always says the day you

die is the day you are supposed to go home.

The other thing is that the death was going to happen, and by donating an

organ, in a way that person's memory lives on through the life given in their

death.

I hope this helps you some.

Way to go ! We celebrated Brent's transplant anniversary on Thanksgiving

Day. His results were almost the same. He entered the hospital with a

creatinine of 9.1 and left with 1.3. At one year he was still 1.3. Soooooo

1.3!

Lynn,

Congratulations on your son's blessings too! I know both your boys are so happy

the transplant is behind them and that Brent is doing so well.

happy things are going well.
