Guest guest
Talked with the infusion nurse on Friday when I went in for the Neulasta shot. They will slow down the Cytoxan and up the fluids. They think this will take care of the headache. Again I'm nauseous and have a headache... have been that way all day w/the bone aches in my face, jaw and arm. Trying to drink and can't find anything that doesn't upset the stomach. Took another compazine and hoping that will put me out for the night. Tomorrow has to be better, right? Right? One day at a time... Barb 1 down, 3 to go at least in this phase of treatment. First treatment went okay. Was not prepared for the port insertion, however. Unfortunately, they did it without any numbing meds and the surgeon put it a little too far under the skin. Next time they will do that a little different (numbing meds and a longer needle and lying me a little flatter) and hopeful I won't hit the nurse (actually only pushed her hand away). Did the push on the first part, Adriamycin and a drip on the second, Cytoxan and was home by 1 pm. The headache started about the time the last drip was done. By 10:30 pm, dh had me in the ER (after trying some things my onc suggested, finally sending me to ER) where we were until 4:30 am trying to get the nausea and headache under control. They wanted to give me dilautin (sp) but that is what caused me to throw up and a big headache after the mastectomy so I wouldn't let them. Eventually they started me on morphine and kept giving that to me with no help. After! about 3-4 shots my headache lessoned, I got more nausea meds, benedryl and some pain enhancer and was sent home. Needless to say, by the time I got out of there I could hardly walk, dh had to hold me up and get me into bed. It was beddy-by for both of us most of the day until the Neulasta shot. Have been okay since then, just tired, not eating too much. Many have talked about the metal taste in your mouth, which I am getting, but had a real hard time trying to drink lots of water... it tasted sweet. Anyone have that problem? I just feel tired and warn out and luckily do not have to do anything important until Monday. Then I'm back on taking care of grandson and getting him to therapy. But he's 6 and quite the helper... just can't drive the car as yet. Hope others who started on Thursday did okay and things are going well for you. I think there were several of us. Hope we'll hear from you as well when you are up to it. Barb

Guest guest
I've tried the ginger ale and ginger cookies. The compazine helps but how long can I keep taking that? The headache is starting to subside, but with the compazine, I just want to sleep to make it through the day. Is there better stuff than compazine or is that the best for this nausea? Guest guest
Barb, I took Compazine and it did the trick for me. I didn't have much nausea so maybe thats why it worked. You should be able to take it for how ever long as needed. I would definitely call the onc and tell him the problems you are having and maybe they can add something to the Compazine or switch you over to something else. There are all kinds of nausea drugs out there and if one doesn't work they just have to keep trying till they find one that helps. You are in my prayers. Guest guest
Barb - On my last treatment, compazine had stopped working...so they gave me phenergan. This made my legs feel "antsy", so I had to take some benedril first. Phenergan will also make you sleepy. Guest guest
Barb - I had dexamethasone, an anti-nausea steroid, through my IV before every chemo drug dose. I never had any nausea or vomiting. What I did have from it was a bright red face the following day, like a hot flush, and a couple of sleepless nights - not uncomfortable, just my brain not switching off. nne's right - there are many anti-nausea fixes. Dexamethasone did the trick for me - maybe it would for you, or there will be something else that will. Guest guest
I had the dexamethasone during infusion, I think, because they talked about the red face the next day. Onc has put me on Zofran which is suppose to be a step up from Compazine. So far its not done a whole lot. Still not feeling well, but will certainly give it some time. I'm sipping the ginger ale...nothing is coming up although I still feel like I'd feel better if it did. Just wish I had something to knock me out... for a few days, maybe then I'd feel better. Thanks for all the info. Something here has to work soon. Barb 1 down, 3 to go at least in this phase of treatment. First treatment went okay. Was not prepared for the port insertion, however. Guest guest
Hi Barb, I too switched to Emend after my first treatment when I was throwing up. I got it via IV. I still had some nausea, but was not throwing up. I don't recall having a headache. -
Guest guest
Emend is given (prescription by our cancer center) an hour before treatment, and once each morning the next 2 days. They also IV before treatment with a 72 hour nausea med and then sent me home with compazine (prescription for). Unfortunately, it wasn't enough. What I have now....Zofran, seems to be helping. Still nauseous but able to eat a little and that helps. Will actually go to pick my grandson up from school today. I'll probably be pooped when I return, but the activity might actually help in the long run. I'm ready to try some other drink options next time to pump in more fluid and maybe the bath salts to see if that helps. As I understand it, the sooner you get these chemicals out of your system, the better you'll feel. Barb Re: 1 down, 3 to go BARB Hi Barb,I have been taking Emend, with great results for no nausea.
