Hi , I am gonna jump in here, I don't think it matters how big of an

infection it is. It will spread systematically I think. I hope Myra will

add her knowledge here for you. I would just extract the nasty little thing

and follow a good regimen of antibiotics to rid yourself of the infection.

MYRA??????? Good Luck to you and I say go for it whatever it takes to get

rid of the hives!!!!! Love, ~Alena's Mom

Hi, group. One of our long-time members is a gentleman named Dave who was

one of the first, if not the first, among us to discover the dental

infection connection to CU. I forwarded 's message to him, and below is

the response he gave. I hope this helps you, , and also helps anyone

else out there who is considering a possible dental connection.

Air hugs,

Jackie

This is a tough call. As many have discovered, detecting infection, even

with state of the art digital equipment is very difficult. I can only speak

from my personal experience and when my dentist first noticed the " dark

spot " on my x-ray he casually commented " looks like

a bit of infection " . The extent of infection wasn't discovered until the

apicoectomy when the gum was opened and the oral surgeon was able to see the

extent of infection at the root as well as the surrounding bone. He root

capped the tooth and using a burr on his drill removed as much infected bone

as possible and closed it up. Several rounds of antibiotic later all was

well.

Since I am a frequent customer of my dentist I've come to know many forms

that these problems can present as. A cracked tooth can also harbor the kind

of bacteria that can be a problem and this condition is also very tough to

diagnose. There can be some success in capping a cracked tooth but success

rates are not good. Some months after my successful apico I had a problem in

another tooth that turned out to be a crack and it was only discovered when

the doc was packing the canal and saw some material ooze out of the crack.

We fooled around with it for a few visits but eventually it had to go. Again

during the course of treatment I would notice some hiving activity that

settled down after the tooth was removed.

Even as I write this I am debating on a course of treatment with another

tooth that is acting up and yes, some minor CU symptoms are starting to

become a bother although intermittent.

My advice would be to attempt to save the tooth if possible, hope there is

dental insurance. I would discuss an apicoectomy with the dentist to see if

that is possible, it saved my tooth but I was informed that it could still

fail in a month, year or after several years but I think you can't beat real

teeth and they're worth saving if possible.

What type of CU does this guy have? Mine was dermographism and mainly a

problem at night.

Sorry for the rambling response, hope this helps. Give my regards to the

group. Feel free to edit as necessary if you are reposting this on the

board.

Regards,

Dave

Hi

I'm not a dentist and haven't got any root canals, but.........can you get a second opinion from another dentist before you make your decision? Or a third opinion? Maybe if you tried treating the small infection with antibiotics first, and then see how it goes? Is the tooth a really visible one or is it at the back of your mouth? I can understand it must be hard to know what to do for the best. Of course you want to get rid of the hives, and it would be so worth losing the tooth if that was to happen, but there are no guarantees. Correct me if I'm wrong, everybody, but I think it really is only a very, very tiny few people who have found a definate connection between their CU and root canals. I know that's a good thing but it seems to imply that for the vast majority of us, it isn't going to be that easy. On the other hand, there is a lot of information around which seems to show that root canals aren't a good thing, in general, and should be avoided at all costs, if possible. Let us know what you decide. Best wishes, Carol

Hi Carol,

I have a second opinian and she told me that an infection could cause urticaria! I send a question to a Brasilian Odonto Website, and ones again they told me yes, that is possible a connection. I gonna try a third opinian ..., but they always to re-treat the canal!!
