Guest guest
> > How do you guys navigate with keeping colonoscopy prep SCD legal? > I'm scheduled to have a colonoscopy on March 30 and was wondering about everything myself. The nurse told me to drink plenty of Gatorade so I wouldn't get dehydrated. I don't want to drink Gatorade! She said I need to drink more than just water and I agree. I can't have anything to drink red or purple so that kicks out the grape juice. Will my apple cider be enough??? It and water??? I'm very concerned about this. I'm not a big drinker anyways so was just wondering. I'm trying not to be nervous about the colonoscopy but it will be my first time. The " cleaning out part " has me more concerned I think. Usually when I get going (diarrhea) it seems my intestines don't know how to stop on their on. They remind me of the song on the Madagascar movie....... " I like to move it, move it! " I sure don't want to get dehydrated and arrive for the colonoscopy half sick. Anyone with any suggestions??? Blessings, Tonya
Guest guest
Jody, Well, for more than you ever wanted to know about colonoscopy meds, read here: http://www.sedationfacts.org/sedation-medication If you want to know about all that went on behind the scenes with my colonoscopy, http://community.compuserve.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?tsn=1 & nav=messages & webtag=ws-diabetes & tid=25211 or http://tinyurl.com/8pru4q Based on my own experiences, the gastro, unless you have an unusually discerning one, will listen to whatever you tell him about your issues, and then write cookie-cutter instructions because the only thing he's interested in is doing the colonoscopy. He really doesn't care about any of your other issues. So, when you are given the packet of instructions, park your butt right there in the office and go through them. If there's anything you aren't sure of, clarify it then and there -- ask to speak to the head endoscopy nurse, who is more likely to listen than the doctor. My gastro blew off my concerns about anesthesia and my sleep apnea. The endoscopy nurse told me that she did not think I would need my Bipap during or after the procedure, but that I should bring it, and then if I needed it, my husband could come set it up and put my mask on me. Pay real careful attention to the clean-out meds. I was prescribed four bisacodyl tablets as a heavy-duty laxative three hours before I started drinking the Trilyte. (Trilyte, without the flavor packets is legal). Bisacodyl has not one, but FOUR illegals in it. But I was able to find the stool softener which my surgeon prescribed (can't find the bottle at the moment; I think it's a generic) which was at least close to legal. Basically, my instructions were to start with the heavy-duty laxative at 4p, drink half gallon of TriLyte between 7p and 8p, squirt like mad between 8-10p, then pull on my Bipap for about 4-5 hours sleep, get up by 3a, drink another half gallon of Trilyte between 3 & 4, and squirt like mad between 4 & 6. The second round of clean-out was done while trying not to scream and throw up because my back was flaring, and I wasn't permitted to have any pain medications. The supplements I normally use were out because they would " cloud the view. " By the time I arrived for the procedure at 7a, I was begging them to knock me out just to stop the back pain. There was no pain (for me) associated with the colonoscopy. All of the problems stemmed from the fact that the gastro didn't consider anything except my colon in issuing the orders. The colonoscopy itself wasn't bad. It was the refusal, once again, of most doctors to look at the whole patient, instead of the parts. I would make all your prep liquids -- broth, juices, etc. yourself, given how sensitive you are. And I would also have food for 2-3 days after the procedure ready, in case you do react. My issues, once I got past the bisacodyl business, weren't even to do with SCD. It was other health issues which got in the way. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you have as positive news from this procedure as you did from the blood work! — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Have you considered having the colonoscopy without sedation? I always ask not to be sedated. I react very strongly to sedation, and to most drugs, for that matter. (I have Crohn’s disease -- have had since the 1980s, and have had two small-bowel resections. My Crohn’s came out of remission (again) a couple of years ago and I had my last colonoscopy last August. ) The scope is a little uncomfortable, and momentarily painful here and there, but that doesn’t last long. (And it feels so good when it stops! J) The good thing about this approach is that you can watch the screen along with your doctor and actually see what kind of shape your colon/small bowel/rectum is in. Or, if you’re the queasy type about that kind of thing, don’t watch! Personally, I feel more “in control” of the disease knowing what it looks like in my small intestine. That’s kind of irrational, I guess, but I find it helpful. And then when the colonscopy is finished, you can just get up, dress, and walk away without having to hang around and get “sober.” .. n (just starting the SCD, and happy to have found this list) Western NY State From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of jodah235 Sent: Thursday, February 05, 2009 1:17 PM To: BTVC-SCD Subject: Colonoscopy meds How do you guys navigate with keeping colonoscopy prep SCD legal? Guest guest
Hey Kim M, Thanks for reminding me about Versed. I had that when I got my wisdom teeth removed and it didn't cause bad nausea (the nausea where I feel like I am going to pass out) I am going to use the OsmoPrep as Fleet caused me to end up in the hospital. Also, the E-Lyte, diluted pear juice, clear chicken broth. Anyway, thanks so much! Jodi > For colonscopies and endoscopies (and as a pre-op anesthetic for surgeries) I have been given Versed (midazolam). Worked well for me. I think it's generally used for colonoscopies, although perhaps I've been given Versed because of my sensitivity to morphine. > > As to the colonoscopy prep, I make my own electrolyte drink and use diluted juices instead of soda to mix with the cleanout med. I've had both GoLyte and Fleets phospho-soda, both unflavored.

Did your supplement take a while for it to work again? Which supplement do you take for your back? My husband has bad back issues. > It was the refusal, once again, of most doctors > to look at the whole patient, instead of the parts. Will they ever learn? It was > other health issues which got in the way. OK.. I will do this. I have an extra freezer now too so it will be easy to have back-up food. My mom said she will come into town to help me. I am quite terrified because of a couple of reasons; past experience, clean-out that caused me to go to the hospital, will I flare from this? Will I get better? and also the GI didn't seem the slightest bit happy that I have not had a colonoscopy in so long and the type of Colitis in my colon- well.. I don't want to think about it. What's important is I found this diet - I wish sooner. But I found it and am adhering to it and it has saved my life. I was miserable before SCD. I have blossomed due to this journey thanks to people like you helping me! > I'll keep my fingers crossed that you have as > positive news from this procedure as you did from the blood work! Guest guest
Hi n, When I was 17 I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy at the same time. This is when I was Israel as I had health insurance there. I was not sedated. I screamed through the whole procedure and I remember the Gastro tugging the scope both ways fighting me. It resembled an alien abduction. My screaming caused everyone in the waiting room to leave the building. My father was told to leave as well. I have never recovered from this experience. I could hardly talk and sit. Just typing this out makes me feel faint and sick. A couple of years after that I had a colonoscopy in the states where I was sedated- fully out, no memory of the experience and there was an anesthesiologist present- taking care of me. This experience has not canceled out the first colonoscpy. I spoke to my current GI at length about this and that I am traumatized and scarred and he said he will personally discuss everything with me as a person like me needs to have a colonoscopy every year which I said " 2 years " and we settled on every 18 months (like Sheila over at PB) Maybe one day I will be strong enough to get over that. As of now, I am terrified. Jodi > > Have you considered having the colonoscopy without sedation?
Guest guest
>> > >> I am quite terrified because of a couple of reasons; > past experience, clean-out that caused me to go to the hospital, Jodi, what happened with the clean out that you had to go to the hospital? I'm a little worried about that myself. I'm suppose to go on March 30 for a colonscopy. Tonya
Guest guest
Hi Tonya, I used the Fleet prep and I just became so violently ill. I puked and got incredibly cold. People getting cold happens that why Sheila uses a heating pad during her clean-outs. Marilyn explained to me that preps cause an extreme electrolyte imbalance.. Which I have learned causes the kidneys to freak out. There are preps that are much better than the Fleet like OsmoPrep, Miralax or Geolyte (spelling? Kim M just mentioned it) I also lost all sense of control over my bowel from the Fleet couldn't make it to the toilet.. was falling over. The works. I know my experience of how violent it was is not the norm although it does happen to some of us. Just make a better decision about the prep.. Osmoprep is supposed to be calmer for people as it is pills and you don't have to chug down all that disgusting liquid. But everyone has there own preferences. Guest guest
Terry, The Fleet was a nightmare. Upon research I don't think my kidneys have ever been the same. They are just sensitive. I was given IV morphine much of the month I was in the hospital due to my bowel obstruction. I was in such constant nausea that I would not want the morphine- I would refuse and everyone talked me into it which made them give me IV Compazine which did nothing except put me to sleep- which is the best thing medicine has to offer extreme nausea- knock me out!! I think one of the reasons I was not getting better from the Bowel Obstruction was due to the Morphine. My doc at the time said that " Morphine slows the healing time but thats it " My theory of it making my Upper Right Quadrant really unhappy- well the doc just basically laughed at me. I am writing down Versed and Fentanyl down NOW!! Thank you for the explanation! Jodi

Guest guest
Please le me introduce myself. My name is karen and I have been on the CCD for about 3 weeks. I have seen some improvements. I have UC. It has been almost a year now. If anyone is interested....I wanted to tell you what and how I did my prep for the colonoscopy. I tried to take the usual preps and I always got really sick with them. so an x- ray tech told me I could do the liquid diet for 3 days and then then take one dulcolax. it works. I asked the Doc if I could do that and of course she said " Oh No, that wouldn't get you clean enough you have to take one of these drugs " but as usual I did it anyway, because I was so sick from the other preps and I had to keep putting off the test. Well when I was done the Doc actually said to me...see that wasn't so bad I knew you could do it. I just laughed to myself. I have done this 3 times and all 3 times no one ever said I wasn't clean enough. I also never got sick from chicken broth, jello, juice, things like that. thanks for listneing

Guest guest
WOW Jodi, that's horrible!!!! I can't even imagine that. I am so sorry you went through that! Not sure if it has been mentioned yet as I haven't read the whole thread here, but I was told there are two common ways that sedation is done in the US: conscious sedation: demerol + versed unconscious sedations: propofol + ? The conscious sedation is the most commonly used but is controversial to some. The versed is an amnesiac drug and thus anything that happens during a colonoscopy will more than likely not be remembered even though you are more than likely conscious during the procedure. I personally found this disturbing although many don't mind. I'm less familiar with the propofol and the safety associated with it, though. I'll be researching this more when I'm due again. Guest guest
Jodi that's the one they used on me too! - i found the miralax/ducolax easier on me than fleet phososoda eileen > > Jodi > > For colonscopies and endoscopies (and as a pre-op anesthetic for surgeries) I have been given Versed (midazolam). > > Kim M. > SCD 5 years > > >>>>>>>>>>> > How do you guys navigate with keeping colonoscopy prep SCD legal? > Also, there are so many meds that I do not tolerate well due to my > health sensitivities.
