Marilynn,

Great question!

I take two of these twice a day:

http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?

CATID=100153 & navAction=jump & navCount=1 & id=prod3410

I was able to buy them cheaper than that price and on sale as buy one

get one free at the local Walgreen's. I stocked up since they have a

rather far out expiration date (something like a year and half).

They're monstrously huge tablets but I'm used to them.

I take one PreCare PreNatal vitamin a day:

http://www.drugs.com/pdr/precare_prenatal_caplets.html

I take two Fish Oil Tablets a day for the hell of it. I did ask my PA

and Dietician before starting to take them.

I also asked them if I could change to an over the counter vitamin

instead of the PreCare Prenatal by prescription (I pay about $42 for

90 caplets). They said that I could use " any " Prenatal Vitamin. I

hate that sort of " rule " or advice because that is far too open for

me to deal with. Especially where this area is concerned since I read

in this forum constantly about vitamin issues, problems, vitamin

shots, etc. Also, my blood work is fine and I feel very healthy on

the PreCare so I don't want to mess that up.

Being a very nerdy/logical person what I did was try to find the

closest match I could to the PreCare ones. One thing I've read a bit

on is that some weight loss surgery males tend to overdose on Iron.

I've read that Iron isn't really all that essential for men or at

least not nearly so much or in such doses as for women. The iron in

the pills above is VERY high. I think it's something like 4 times the

RDA. It was also very hard for me to find alternative pills that had

Iron at the level of these pills, prenatal or otherwise. Most

prenatal vitamins I was looking at contained anywhere from 10-15mg of

Iron.

Here's an alternative that I'm focusing on possibly purchasing. It's

not technically a prenatal vitamin but it's the one I've found that

most closely matches the PreCare Prenatal ones.

Total Formula-2 Antioxidant Formula with Iron 60 tablets

Each Tablet Contains:

Vitamin A (water dispersible palmitate) 5000 I.U.

Natural Mixed Carotenoids(water dispersible) 5000 I.U.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid - corn free) 100 mg

Vitamin D-3 (cholecalciferol) 400 I.U.

Vitamin E ( water dispersible, d-alpha-tocopherol succinate) 30 I.U.

Vitamin K-1 (water dispersible) 70 mcg

Vitamin B-1 (thiamine) 15 mg

Vitamin B-2 (riboflavin) 15 mg

Vitamin B-3 (niacinamide) 25 mg

Vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine) 25 mg

Folic Acid 400 mcg

Vitamin B-12 (on ion exchange resin) 25 mcg

Biotin 300 mcg

Vitamin B-5 (d-calcium pantothenate) 25 mg

Choline (bitartrate) 10 mg

Hesperidin Complex 10 mg

Citrus Bioflavonoids 10 mg

Rutin 10 mg

Inositol 10 mg

PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) 8 mg

Calcium (citrate/ carbonate/phosphate complex) 100 mg

Iron(carbonyl iron) 20 mg

Chromium GTF (as 50% chromium picolinate and 50% chromium

polynicotinate) 500 cg

The minerals and trace elements below are provided as amino acid

chelates:

Iodine 100 mcg

Magnesium 100 mg

Zinc 30 mg

Selenium 25 mcg

Copper 2 mg

Manganese 6 mg

Molybdenum 100 mcg

Potassium 25 mg

Boron 1mg

Silicon 2.4 mg

Vanadium 25 mcg

Ok now we can see from this mess that there's actually quite a lot

more in these pills. These pills have at least as much of all the B

vitamins as the prenatal ones I'm taking now. You might notice the

calcium in these pills is less than that of the prenatal ones but I'm

taking the calcium supplement so I should be all set in that

department

The Iron in the cheaper pills is half that of the prescription ones.

But, again, Iron shouldn't be an issue for me. The Iron is at 20mg

which is the highest I've seen even for prenatal ones.

These pills work out to be a quarter of the cost of the prescription

ones I'm taking. http://store.myhealth-store.com/v-194005.html. Think

I should get some?

That's basically all I take.

The Walgreen's link was supposed to be to the Calcium suppliment. It

also includes Vitamin D. Each tablet is 600mg of Calcium. So that

works out to 2400mg of Calcium.

I am three weeks post op tomorrow. I take 3 Citracal a day (I had

borderline normal calcium bone density prior to surgery, this should

subside to one a day after some bone mass is built up over the next

year),one multi vitamin (I do Women's One A Day), 2 Flintstones

chewables, one iron pill every other day until menopause, 1 Nexium for

the first month post-op to help the pouch lining heal.

Hi,

I take 1 multivitamin per day and 1 calcium chew per day. I've never

taken more than that-in fact the calcium I added on my own-my Dr.

only requires the multivitamin unless lab abnormalities exist. My

labs have always been fine.
