My reason for joining a group like this is my constant fall into denial and

This is exactly the reason I want to be in a group like this, so that every day

I can be reminded I have a disease. If I can remember every day, and take care

of my disease every day, then I think I can last the distance. But if I keep

allowing myself to forget, then I can't hide it from you guys. I think it is

putting myself some where where I can be accountable. Thank you all for

welcoming me, makes me feel good. Beverley in Perth Western Australia.

Re: new member

LOL Beverly,

I have two reasons for continuing to be on diabetes mailing lists

after 7 years .. one is to keep up with the latest and to learn from

others successes, failures etc. The second is so that every day I am

forced to remember I am a diabetic. I need to be told every day. It

keeps me thinking about diet, bgs, exercise and other things it would

be very convenient to 'forget'.

Re: new member

Hello Beverley and welcome to our group.

Judging by my experience, you will find belonging a great help in

denying denial and keeping on with your treatment.

We have lofty goals here that we talk about a LOT: Most of us want to

get our numbers as close to non-diabetic as we can, thereby winning a

healthy life.

Some of us already know what happens when you are uncontrolled enough to

begin to suffer with consequences. Me, for one. I have extensive

neuropathy; however my eyes, kidneys and cardiac system are in excellent

condition. I want to keep all the function I can.

Being here with others who feel mostly the same, who have the same

difficulties I encounter trying for tight control, is inspiring. Plus

there is a lot of information from members who speak from their own

experiences.

I think you will find you are in a good place here.

Thank you Kathy. In Australia our health system is different than the states. I

understand a little of what you talk about, mainly through watching shows like

ER. My mother has type 2 diabetes, she maintains a consistent level, and takes

glucophage. My partner has tyepe 2 diabetes, he takes diaformin, diabex. He

maintains consistent levels as well. So far only trouble he has had was two

hypos. but I think daily focus will help me, Beverley

Re: new member

Welcome Beverly to the group I'm sure you will enjoy it. I'm Kathy 55 live

i N. CA and was diagnosed T2 this past Augest when I went in for a knee

replacement and my pre-op lab tests came back that diabetes was probable so

was told by my surgeon to get it checked with my Primary care giver as soon

as i got out of hospital. Due to the Primary care giver I had seen refusing

me treatment for a infection which delayed surgery I no longer had one so

first had to find one. Niw have a caring team caring for me. I take 2-500mg

metformin daily and eat low carb but due to other problems cannot exercise

so it is a struggle to keep my bgs down. I to at times get to lax in my

care but this list is great to keep me focused plus I have a brother-in-law

who has lost two feet and a kidney due to diabetes and his not taking care

of it for to many years. If you have questions this group is great for

answering them so ask away.

Another reason I keep up after 7+ years with the " 800 pound gorilla, " as

Susie used to call diabetes, is that you've all become my Diabetic

Family and you're very important to me. Some people come and go ...and

then there's the old faithfuls...like Tootie...and Ressie...and

Helen...and Suzz...and many others.

It means a lot to me that I can share what I've learned about diabetes

and good diabetic control and hopefully, motivate at least a few people

and save them from the dreaded consequences of poor control.

Hi Tommie, and welcome to your group.

Before we can even offer any advice, we need some more information.

Do you do any carb counting?

What kind of foods do you eat?

Have you read any books on diabetes and, if so, what?

What are your other conditions and medications?

Are you able to do any exercise?

What was your last A1c?

How is your weight?

As to lantus, I could not use it; it did not meet my needs. It wasn't

there when I needed it and altogether too much there when I didn't. I

changed the timing of my doses and finally went back to UL. Twice.

Tommie, Lantus doesn't work perfectly for everyone. Many of us have

found that UL (ultralente) correctly dosed and taken twice a day does

much better.

I learned about excellent insulin dosing from another list I belong to.

The moderator, Ron Sebol, is a retired diabetic engineer who devised an

individualized system for determining exact insulin dosing which he's

willing to share with anyone who joins the list You can get excellent

results if you can stick with the program, which involves a LOT of

testing.

Anyone who wants the join-up information, contact me offlist and I'll be

happy to pass it on.

Vicki, LADA type 1 diagnosed 1997, UL and Humalog insulin and lotsa

testing, no complications.

I look at your list and see lots of problems with pain. Are the

narcotics you are taking keeping the pain at reasonable levels? Is the

neurontin for fibro or for neuropathy?

The spinal stenosis - is that a fairly localized pain?

Lots of lasix, are they following potassium, calcium and mag levels? As

a matter of fact, wouldn't HP raise those levels? Any possibility of

removing one or two of those paras? Actually the wisest thing would be

to remove them all, implant them in your arm for safekeeping and move

them back as needed. All during the same surgery.

I think your insulin regimen sure could use some work. The idea is to

tailor it to diet, not vice versa. I also think you should be taking

way more Humalog than you are and less lantus. But that is something

that needs testing to work out.

A pump for you sounds like a good idea. Sit on that doctor until he

moves your way! If not, check with your insurance as to other doctor

options. Additionally, you can contact the pump companies yourself and

have them push both your doctor and your insurance, if necessary.

Estrogen can raise bgs too. I found I was much better off with a patch

than with a pill. Presently I am using vivelle dots, .0375mg. Small

rectangles, less than an inch by half an inch and no problems with the glue.

Reglan and prilosic for??? You did not mention gastroparesis, but

Reglan is used for that.

If the insurance will pay for it, you might do well with an exercise

program that is tailored for you and allows for all your conditions.

Tommie, I bet everyday you get out of bed you prove how brave you are.

Hi Tommy, welcome to the list. I use Lantus 60 units and Humalog 125-150

units.

My experience has been just like the supplied information says. Lantus stays

with me for 22 to 24 hours. I take it at 8 PM. That way if it is not acting

as long as it should I should detect it with my

2 hour post meal test. The Humalog is a sliding scale, Breakfast is

1 unit for 2.5 carbs, This is to cover my Dawn rise which is quite strong.

Lunch and supper is 1 unit for 3 carbs. My correction factor is the same

for all meals 1 unit for 3 BG's. My A1c's have been below 6% last being

5.4%.

The success is the testing.

I test before and 2 hours after every meal, before and after exercise,

3 AM once a week. I also test if I really don't know about carbs in a

meal I eat, at 1 hour after meal. I test if I feel LOW. which has been

very rare with me. I keep a log of all actions I do. Here is a link to the

type of form I use:

http://www.lillydiabetes.com/pdf/carb_worksheet_sample.pdf

Once I have it on paper I can do pattern analysis on it. That is if the BG's

are always High in the morning fasting test then my lantus may not be

enough, but I must test at 3 AM

a couple of days in a row, to make sure that my bg is not low. If my bg is

normal at 3 AM and high at fasting morning test I probably have a dawn

phenomenon working. Then what I have to do is eat my breakfast at 5 AM with

my normal dosing. This takes care of the morning high problem. If my 3 AM bg

is high then I have to increase the Lantus.

Hopr this helps.

Hi ,

Thank you for the warm welcome :-) When I first started reading this and saw

the large amts of Humalog, I thought OMGosh! But that is per day right? I'm

glad that works for you and I know mine will be increased some because what

I am on isn't near enough. I learned that partially today as I experimented.

As you have probably seen, I have a journal going and I see my Endo the 8th

of March in which I will print that and take it to him. I've been going to

him for almost a year now and I think it's time we really get this sugar

under control. I'm willing!

Oh yes and thank you for the link to the form. That will be very helpful for

me and my doc will be able to read it more readily. Goodness that is an

early time to eat breakfast. I'm still dreaming at that hour. Lol I usually

eat between 6:30 and 7 which isn't much later than you :-) I have learned

through you that I need to take my Lantus the same time each day and also to

eat at the same times each day. I have never gotten up during the night and

tested. But I will and see what we have there.

Thank you for your help , I really appreciate it. All of you at this

Group are so much help. I'm glad I found you all.

Tommie
