Guest guest
Margery, I will be praying for you as I know everyone else will! Please update us as soon as you can after your surgery, but just know we will have you in our thoughts and our prayers! I am so looking forward to surgery too! I think I would have it tomorrow if I could and be done with it but I know that I must walk through all this and this group sure makes it easier! I really needed every minute of that 4 days! Those of you who have had a mastectomy, how long was your hosp stay? Love,
Guest guest
Margery, I don't think you will be sorry you got the mastectomy. I sure am glad I had the mastectomy. So I saw my breast surgeon yesterday, and he's booking me in for surgery on Monday 8 May. Yippee! The lump looks small (2.74cms.) from one angle, but he's not sure of its size from another angle. So he said that one possibility was to do a lumpectomy, send the bits off to the path lab, wait days for the results (nothing instant here) and then if the margins weren't clear he'd have to call me back in for another op. It will be altogether safer to do a mastectomy and take all the lymph nodes associated with the breast, all in one go. And then the radiation schedule will follow on from what the path lab finds in all that removed material. A mastectomy is what I have been hoping for all along, so I am content with that. And all that long chemo schedule has hugely increased my survival prognosis. I expect to be in hospital for 5 to 7 days - this is private medicine, paid for by my medical insurance, not the NHS (National Health Service). I don't know what I'd get from there. It's good, I think, but not this good. All for now, Love, Margery. ============================================ margery@... in North Herts, UK ============================================
Guest guest
I was in for 1pm surgery one day and out by 10:30 am the next. I could have stayed another day if I wanted to, but really felt well enough to go home. Only disappointing part was my grandson (he lives with us). I was so worried about me not being there for him (I'm the only constant woman figure in his life) and the first thing he said to me was...'grandma, you aren't suppose to be here, you are suppose to be at the hospital for another night.' He wasn't disappointed... I just messed up HIS schedule. Barb Re: Saw the surgeon ... Margery; you will be in the hospital for 5 to 7 days? Hey, take advantage of the rest time. Guest guest
Gosh, Barb, that's less than 24 hours! I'm sorry I can't remember - was yours a lumpectomy or a mastectomy? How long is a normal hospital stay in the US for lump vs. whole breast removal? Does it depend on how good your insurance cover is, as well as what the doctors think is best for you? I think I might enjoy the bed rest - I'll take in a few books (trashy fiction <G>) and some sewing (quilting). And there'll be TV in my room, and radio, and meals provided ... hey, do you think I could stay longer? Guest guest
It was actually that way for both... had one then the other about 8 weeks later. I'm not sure what is normal... 1 over night for lumpectomy, I think. I believe I went home in one night for the mastectomy because I felt good and the doctor felt I was doing well. On one hand... a longer stay would have been nice (read some books, magazines, tv, catch up on some phone calls, write letters, etc.) I think even I would have been begging to get out of there after 2 days. I think dh would have been bored to death, even if he could bring his laptop and then I'd worry about him and he about me.... well, just say, for me, the over night was fine. <s> Barb Re: Saw the surgeon ... Guest guest
I had a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery at the same time. They only let me stay in the hospital 4 days...as long as I was on an IV for pain meds. Guest guest
Hi Margery, My lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy SNB was done as an outpatient. My mastectomy covered one overnight. I think that's pretty standard for the U.S., and I have a good insurance plan. I was fine at home, and fortunately my husband emptied my drains so I didn't have to deal with that. If I remember correctly you're doing your mastectomy and nodes at the same time? I think that's called a radical mastectomy, and mine was a simple mastectomy. So maybe you're getting a longer hospital stay because of that. I found the SNB harder to recover from than the mastectomy because of the limited range of arm movement. Enjoy your hospital stay. Maybe you can even have your drains removed before you go home. -

Guest guest
I had the trans flap. Basically they take tissue from your abdomin and move it up under your skin to your breast area. Of course with my mastectomy I lost my nipple, but the plastic surgeon said they could take care of that as well - separately. I choose not to. I was at the plastic surgeon's today. I have a large area of scar tissue that I think...and he agrees...can interfer with a mammogram. I'm considering having additional surgery to have that remove. While he was at it, he did a lift on my left breast so that they would be at about the same area of my chest....so now I have one breast of a 20 year old! Since they took the tissue from my abdomin, they also had to tighten the area and I got a little tummy tuck at the same time. If I knew how much pain I would be in for about 3 weeks, I don't know if I would have done it...but now that I am beyond the pain, I'm glad I did - it's a personal choice of course. Hope that helps - and that I wasn't too graphic! Guest guest
The original plan was to keep me over night. Infact a resident came in the next day and told me I was going home. My sugeon came afterwards and told me I was staying as I had one hell of a hemotoma. I ended up staying 3 days and my doctor's assistant tried to convince me to stay longer!
