My dad is also lactose intolerant. But you are not allowed to use lactose free milk. Thats why the yoghurt is so good because it has none in it. The first 2 days of having the yoghurt he had a burning pain in his stomach. But now that pain has gone. Just go slow. If that does not work use goats milk it is meant to be easier to digest. Sky

Hello. I'm new here and new to SCD. I just ordered my book online and am waiting for it to arrive. I also just purchased a yogurt maker online and have a couple of questions.

First of all, I am lactose intolerant and have to take lactaid pills prior to any type of dairy. I also drink, cook and bake with nothing but lactaid milk. I just purchased a yogurt machine online to make the scd yogurt. I have read about how you use regular milk, half and half, etc to make it and how during the 24 hr period, the yogurt becomes lactose free. This scares me to death to even try it without a lactaid pill as ANY lactose will immediately cause me to flare! Can the yogurt be made with lactose free milk or will that mess it up?

Also, are lactaid pills "legal" on scd? I saw where we can have certain cheeses but I will definitely need to take a pill beforehand.

Thanks!

Hello,Welcome to the list. You can't make yogurt from Lactaid milk. The yogurt culture feeds on the lactose in the milk and if you use lactose free milk, they're not going to have anything to feed on and the result will not be yogurt. There was another SCDer a while back that had the same concern about residual lactose in the yogurt. She asked Elaine if, after fermenting her yogurt for 24 hours, could she put lactase drops in it to get rid of any remaining lactose. Elaine approved. I looked back through the old files and these are her instructions,Ferment the yogurt for 24 hours, add 15 lactase drops per liter and stir to distribute evenly. Put it in the refrigerator for 24 hours. You can drip it at this point if you want to.You can get the lactase drops (brand is Lacteez) here,

http://digestmilk.com/ and I'm sure they are not the only one. I also found a post that said that Elaine preferred we do it this way and not take the lactaid pills because the action is different and overloads the liver with galactose.Hope this helps. Take care,Kim H.husband, , CD 1999, SCD 2002
