Sew the squares/pieces together first until you have the entire thing done....then add the borders that you want to use. Then you layer the finished top with the batting and the other plain side of the material like an oreo. After that you're all set to do the quilting and add the final outside edge. Happy quilting ! I've got a probably very stupid question here to ask.....lol.

When quilting, I understand the part about squares sort of, but, what I DON'T understand, is, how do you exactly put it all together?

Do you sew the squares together first, and then add the stuffing stuff in the middle along with the backing? or, do you sew the backing and stuffing together, and then sew each square onto it then?

If someone who Quilts could email me privately....I would really appreciate it!

Everything I do though will have to be done by hand instead of machine, because neither of the 2 sewing machines Gene has bought me at garage sales work.....

Thanks!

Ok, what do you mean by, You are all set to do the quilting? Is that where you add those pieces of yarn balls thru the material that holds everything together so that it doesn't slip and slide around inside?

I'm wanting to start trying to do one........but, first I guess I'm going to need to find some material first! lol

Does Old T-shirts work? Like, the Cotton ones? Where they stretch.......I'm wondering if that will work.

Otherwise, I might use some of the old blankets I already have that aren't any good.......and then use a new blanket for the backing......and then all I would have to go buy is the batting!

hmmmm, the ideas I have.....lol

Thanks Barbara!

I think that t-shirt material would stretch way too much....Hard to know about the blankets....they might be too stretchy too. I always use cotton except for when I did a crazy quilt using satin and velvet. By "quilting at the end" I mean the hand- or machine-quilting that you do at the very end after its all put together. You could just "tie" the quilt by putting the pieces of yarn through it though.iowa97 wrote:

Tonia,

Here's my 2 cents on quilting. Cotton fabric works best to put your pieces or

what they call blocks together that make rows and the rows are sewn together to

make the top of the quilt. I have heard of people using sheets for the backing,

but if you want to hand quilt " which are the tiny stiches you sew the layers

together. I think you are talking about tying a quilt. Thats where you use yarn

and go in even spaces and knot off the yarn. If your near a library check out

any quilting book. Thats how I got alot of my info and did take some classes.

Keep on sewing.

Laurie
