Hi

I started this diet after my consultant told me I had tried every drug available, and there was nothing left except more surgery.I had already had a partial bowel resection, and was determined not to go through that again. Im only on week 5 but already I have noticed big changes. My pain is almost non existent, my gas and bloating has completely gone. I have gone from 15-20 trip to the loo down to 4-5. I havnt seen any significant change in consistency of my stools (which is just water) but i am sure that will come.

I have found it difficult, trying to cook for my family and then scd stuff for me, but gradual introduction of foods is meaning my food is getting closer and closer to their foods if you see what I mean. Ive had a couple of bad days where I convince my self its all too difficult, working full time, looking after the kids then making scd food etc, but when I look at how far Ive come in a short space of time, it makes it worth it.

Hope this helps

Hi,

I was beyond symptomatic and very close to having my colon removed.

The problem with surgery for me is that a couple of docs have told me

that due to " skip lesions " being so severe they wouldn't know which

part to take out and it would probably take 4-5 surgeries to get it

right. No thank you.

If after healing I still have significant scar tissue and that is the

cause of my difficulties than we know exactly the location of what's

going on and I can make an informed decision about my health. This

guessing work is crazy for me and I cannot gamble with my internal organs.

Enough of my rant and back to your question..

I was so symptomatic with fevers and everything. It was very hard for

me- it took over 3 months for -some- symptoms like running to the

bathroom 40+ times a day. The first thing to go away for me was

INTENSE gut pain. For me this was enough to embrace this diet and

hold on for dear life. Suddenly, I was able to sit up for extended

periods of time (I was so sick I couldn't even be in front of the

computer.. So I went on Pecan Bread and got an SCD councilor.

Sheila was AWESOME! Very patient and informed woman- incredible)

It has been a really rocky road for me.. And it's like Marilyn says

over and over.. 1 step fwd 2 step back etc. And it really has been

that way for me too.

My goodness though, I have had some good days.. First for me in over

10 years of agony not having a life.

Lowdosenaltrexone.org is something you can look into as well that is

off-topic. But works very well with the SCD. It modulates the immune

response.

Jodi and ,

Thanks you for sharing your stories! I only have diarrhea to

contend with. Thanks to the steroids (I come off on Monday) my trips

to the restroom are maybe two a day, loose BMs. I know the diarrhea

will return on Monday. I am currently on Entocort and Humira as well.

So I have got some help a long the way but will get off these

medications!

My family is with me on this journey...we are making the house 100%

SCD. My son eats fresh fruits and vegetables anyway. He gets his

non-SCD items at school and when we go out.

Have you two ladies been able to maintain your weights?

If you are still symptomatic, how have you progressed through the

foods? This is my biggest question?

I have been on the diet now something like 17 months (a bit longer but

I screwed up so much in the begining that I don't count that)

I have had many many die-off flares to contend with.. So the begining

was rough for me but I saw small improvements like gut pain going

away, urgency dissipating, going to the bathroom a lot less. It's

actually taken quite a while for my stool to actually become " firm " .

Marilyn has constantly reassured me that this takes time too as I have

been sick for 18 years.. So there is significant healing that needs

to take place. Since I was diagnosed with Crohn's/Colitis I have

never been in remission.. My blood values for the first time in my

life have steadily gotten better on the diet too.

As for food introduction I have had to restart the diet from scratch

at the 9/10 month line, I had a flare that started from using allergy

drops but I started getting better but then I ate contaminated meat-

and Whole Foods had a meat recall.. So that has been a lot to deal

with which eventually led me to needing Prednisone.

The first time around the first 3-4 months were difficult but then I

was doing amazingly better and was able to progress quite steadily

even to a point of being able to tolerate some nuts and seeds (YES, me

Jodi was able to eat sesame seeds) During all of this time I had made

many many mistakes so I always had that dance to contend with.

It's taken a while to figure out a formula.

I am also contending with Lyme Disease Co-infections.

This time around the food introduction has gone a lot slower but I

found better ways to deal with satiation like using Ghee and pureeing

food. I also look at food combining as that helps me too. I intro

food on a rotation basis and I make sure the days I am feeling

particularly crummy not to intro anything new. For me, exhaustion and

nausea are big signs of " Jodi must chill out now and not look at yummy

recipes " kind of thing..

My weight has actually gone through quite a few Yoyo's being on the

diet. I fluctuate a lot. I think this is part of healing too.

I am super duper sensitive and I don't know how many people are as

sensitive as me (although there are a few *sharp grin towards Kim M's

direction* I consider her my mentor!)

Slow and steady like needs to be tatoo'd on our arms and all over the

kitchen on this diet. It really is a mantra. Pecan Bread has a great

guideline for stages of intro'ing foods (it never worked for me, but

it gave me an idea how to navigate through all of this)

Also, keep asking questions and just give the diet time.. Now if only

I could listen to my own advice- that would be truly enlightened for me.

Jodi,

Again thanks! Can you explain the off flares?

I know I read in the book around 2-3 months symptoms may return, is

this what you are referencing?

And I have the list from pecan intro list from pecanbread. Is it best

to just go down the list with 2-3 days in b/w each new addition?

My problem is I am hungry! I know we are not limited as to amount but

ne can only ingest so much green beans, or carrots (which I have

limited as I have noticed more orange in my stool.

Mara,

I can eat egg! I eat a lot of egg! I love them! I received my

diagnosis on October 2008. I have not been ill long but I have had a

heck of a ride---lost 50lbs b/c of severe CD. I have inflammation

throughout the small bowel and terminal ileum so I have absorption

issues. The one saving grace for me right now is my TPN line pumping

about 3000 calories a day into my veins.

SO.....I have added some advanced foods like raw fruit...oranges

aren't giving me any issues....just had one actually....

Allowable cheeses aren't an issue either like I had baked talapia w/

havarti cheese and green beans...

but again...lin pointed out the steroids may be " masking " any

effects i may be having BUT before I even came close to SCD dieting,

If I ate sugar or pure dairy I was sent running for the toilet w/

steroids so.....I'm not sure how much " masking " may be occurring...

I'll be honest I started the diet weeks ago...fell off the wagon and

ate some illegals and wanted to get back on strict SCD....everyone

recommended I start over w/ the intro diet...please see other postings

from me for my story and questions.

Any thoughts?

When I started the diet I had considerable pain, inflammation and diarrhea. I was on Entocort and Prednisone. I went on the diet, stopped the medication and have not had one flare since then, but it was a long hard process and for the first six months I was so tired I had to go on part-time work (that was because all my energy was going into healing).

CD diagnosed Sept 2006

SCD since Oct 2006

No meds

No symptoms
