Guest guest
I’ve been on the diet less than a week and am having a problem about which some of you may be able to give good advice. Some background first: For the month of January, before I started the SCD, I went on a gluten-free diet and was taking probiotics in capsule form (a different type; I have been taking probiotics for a long time, and they’ve helped a great deal for gas). I was also on a powdered nutritional supplement that contained vitamins, minerals and some natural anti-inflammatory things like curcumin (turmeric). That seemed to help, but it contains rice syrup and fructose (and I think rice flour) so I can no longer take it. That diet wasn’t doing enough, though it did improve my diarrhea a fair bit. (I’ve had two small-bowel resection surgeries and have lost a couple of feet of my small intestine, so I may suffer some from “short-bowel syndrome.” I’m not sure that’s “curable.”) I’ve had Crohn’s since the early 1980s. Now the diarrhea is back and I’ve got more pain in my side, sometimes acute. For years I’ve had what was assumed to be a lactose intolerance. I’m wondering whether I’m reacting to the yogurt, not necessarily to lactose (my own yogurt, made with ½ and ½ turned out very well and is very thick; I’m assuming its lactose was eaten up in the making process), but possibly to milk protein. I admit, however, that until today I didn’t cut out all the foods that I had been eating (that didn’t seem to bother me). So it could be I’m reacting to other things I’ve eaten the last few days that I can’t tolerate now. I’m wondering whether for a while I should cut out the yogurt and take acidophilus in capsule form instead. Have any of the rest of you had this problem, and if so, how did you solve it? n No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. Guest guest
I posted what’s below on Saturday. Haven’t seen any responses. I’d really appreciate comments/advice. (I’m having trouble getting into the archives, or I’d look there for answers. I receive the group mail via email, but I do have a Yahoo ID, yet can’t read the old posts.) n From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of n Sent: Saturday, February 07, 2009 12:47 PM To: BTVC-SCD Subject: Questions re: just beginning SCD I’ve been on the diet less than a week and am having a problem about which some of you may be able to give good advice. You've got to try it really slowly, in tiny increments. Also you may want to start with goat milk, not cow's milk, which is easier for the majority of the people to digest, because it's molecules are more like the molecules of human milk. May not be a casein allergy, just you've entirely eliminated any tolerance for dairy that your system had, so you'll have to build it back up really slowly. I'd stop the yogurt for now. >not necessarily to lactose (my own yogurt, made with ½ and ½ turned out very well and is >very thick; I'm assuming its lactose was eaten up in the making process), but possibly to >milk protein. I'd eliminate it, find out if it is causing the pain, and if it isn't or when you want to try it again, start in tiny increments. Starting with a teaspoon a day - see if that is tolerable before building up again. If that isn't tolerable, next start at a 1/4 teaspoon. Guest guest
Thanks for replying, Mara. I’m probably just trying to go too fast. I am cutting back on the yogurt. The extra pain was caused by some other SCD legal stuff, but too advanced. I haven’t actually been off dairy entirely before starting SCD. I normally used Lactaid milk (for cooking/baking, not to drink), and small amounts of ½ and ½ in coffee, with a Lactaid tablet. What I miss the most is coffee with cream in it! n From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of Mara Schiffren Sent: Sunday, February 08, 2009 5:35 PM To: BTVC-SCD Subject: Re: Questions re: just beginning SCD > >Now the diarrhea is back and I've got more pain in my side, sometimes acute.
