Guest guest
I also had initial bad reactions to yogurt. I’ve now been on the diet for exactly two weeks. The first three to five days, especially, the yogurt gave me bloat, gas, some pain. I cut back on it (and restarted taking acidophilus by capsule, which I had been doing. I’m eating more of it now, though I still don’t feel entirely “right” with it. My bad reaction didn’t surprise me, I guess, as for years I’ve had bad reactions to regular dairy products, though not nearly as much to plain yogurt as to milk. (Before SCD I was regularly using Lactaid tablets when necessary and Lactaid milk when I needed it for cooking, which for me was helpful then.) Sort of related, as it raises questions about different people reacting differently to the same foods: Currently I’m having a lot of lightheadedness, feeling shaky, headachy, etc. I feel like I’m not getting enough carbs. The link that Doug posted re: cod liver oil on Dr. Mercola’s site led me to his download about nutritional typing, and no one diet being exactly right for every single person (that may possibly be controversial here, I don’t know). Mercola’s theory – which his treatment of hundreds of patients has apparently borne out – is that a person must eat right for their nutritional type: Protein Type, Fat Type, Carbohydrate Type (which is NOT at all the same as eating right for your blood type, which a recent book advocates). I’m starting to conclude that I need something nutritionally – I’m guessing more carbs than I’m now eating – that I’m not getting enough of now. I’m going do take his nutritional type testing and am curious to see what it might reveal. I imagine it will be entirely possible to stay on the SCD even though I might possibly be the Carb Type. I would just have to eat more fruit and honey, I would guess. n From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of mcgohetw Sent: Wednesday, February 18, 2009 12:44 PM To: BTVC-SCD Subject: Bad yogurt reaction? Anyone have a bad reaction to scd yogurt, especially at first? Should one be on scd before starting yogurt? (I know Elaine opposed probiotic use w/o scd on grounds that the bacteria just fed bad bacteria in gut; does the same principle apply to yogurt?) I am not yet on scd (working my way up to it), but made my first batch of yogurt this weekend. As far as I know I did everything correctly: organic whole milk, :plain Dannon starter, 25+ hour fermentation. Seemed to turn out quite well -- surprisingly creamy, in fact. I've started off with very small amounts each day, starting Sunday -- less than a cup-- and seemed to tolerate it fine, until today. I had some with breakfast and started cramping around 3 hours later, which led to a trip to the bathroom for small floating loose bowel (sign of high fat?) Now there are other possible triggers -- eggs for breakfast, midmorning snack of nuts and cream of rice (illegal, I know) -- which on occasion trigger problems (very inconsistently and unpredictably) the timing is usually 2-3 hours later. So, I'm wondering if the yogurt triggered this incident? This is the first time I had it with breakfast; first 3 days I had it in evening. Thanks! Guest guest
n, People always used to be after Elaine to post week by week menus. She said it wasn't possible because everyone was so different. My classic example: Kim M. and I are both SCD. But I need a relatively high fat diet to function and feel well, and she needs a low fat diet to function. Either of us would be miserable on the other's daily menu... yet we are both SCD. I've taken Mercola's test... I didn't fit into any of his categories. I recommend going over to Fitday.Com and getting a free account and plugging in the numbers to see what you're doing in terms of fats, proteins, and carbs. You may find you are eating less of certain things than you think you are. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Hi n: I follow Dr. Mercola very closely but his nutritional typing is not for people specifically with IBD. His diet is promotes raw foods and many disaccharides which are hard to digest. Eventually, when I feel I'm symptom free, I think I'll try his typing to see if I fit anywhere in his spectrum and follow his diet because I really believe Dr. Mercola has people's best interest at heart and it might be a good move from SCD into a more regular diet but I'm no where close to being able to do that. And, SCD in no way says that any one person should eat a certain way or that each person will react the same to any food. I still can't tolerate cooked broccoli or spinach, though I can tolerate them in small amounts raw. But, I have tolerated carrots and cauliflower from the beginning. Each person must tailor SCD to meet their specific needs. I also felt lightheaded and dizzy at the beginning of the diet and thought that it was " hypoglycemia " (which I thought I had) and my body needing carbs (illegal ones). I had read somewhere that protein actually broke down more slowly in the body than carbs. Though carbs would make the symptoms go away fast, it was only temporary. Eating protein would actually make the symptoms stay away. So, I was eating about 8 boiled eggs, 1 lb. of baked chicken, and a hamburger patty here and there every day. Protein really helped control those " hypoglycemic " symptoms and I was much better. Every time I felt a little " hypoglycemic " , I would eat an egg or a piece of chicken and drink a glass of diluted OJ or grape juice and I felt so much better. The juice gave my body that quick rush of sugar I needed to make the symptoms go away and the protein broke down slowly so they would stay away. All these years of eating complex carbs to make the symptoms go away only to have them return, was wasted. I rarely have any of those symptoms anymore when they used to plague me constantly. By the way, I wasn't eating any fruit or veggies except what was in the chicken soup during this period.
