Guest guest
Tom, It's kind of interesting to me how people are quick to blame the SCD food as being the cause of a problem when they're also eating non-SCD foods which could as easily be the problem. Some people do react to the yogurt -- particularly if they have had a dairy sensitivity. Or is the large quantities of probiotics, to which their system is unaccustomed, cause an issue. I strongly recommend keeping a food diary so you know what you ate when (instead of trying to remember it) and what the reactions were. I recall, when I was working my way into SCD, there was one night when I was feeling so ill, and was so desperate for one of my favorite comfort foods. So I went ahead and fixed it... the first bites were good. Then I felt even worse. So I chucked it, and started focusing on being more fully adherent to SCD. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

Also relatives of new SCDers. After I had intense die-off lasting 10 days or so and then another week for full recovery during my first weeks on the diet, my mom kept on pointing out to me that *the diet* was making me sick. > Some people do react to the yogurt -- particularly if they have had > a dairy sensitivity. Guest guest
Mara, Yeah, relatives of new SCDers can be very difficult for the SCDer to cope with. Mine pitched a fit when I went out to eat with them and insisted on sending back food which wasn't correctly prepared because I was " creating a scene " -- I gave in the first time, but I was sooo sick that thereafter I was adamant about correctly prepared food. What was my pre-SCD comfort food? I took an egg and beat it with some water, heated it gently in a frying pan with a whisk (how do you think I later knew egg would thicken broth for gravy?), then added some whole wheat couscous, reduced the heat, covered it, and cooked it for however long the couscous was supposed to be cooked. Then I turned it out on a plate like a pancake, and slathered it with lots of butter and sea salt. HORRIBLY illegal! Funny, you'd think the memory of it would make me want it... but I don't even miss it now. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

Guest guest
I reacted very badly to the yogurt at first. It took a month before I could tolerate even a tablespoon of it. Once I could tolerate a TBS, I worked my way up from there. For me, comfort food had almost always been high fat, rather than sweet or spicy. The egg gave me protein, and the (illegal) coucous was carb, and then the butter slathered on... ah.... These days, I'm apt to do a slab of Basic Bread, toasted, and slathered. With butter. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Hi Misty,It will soon to be a year on SCD for me but I have a huge problem incorporating yogurt any time i try to. I tried several times including last week (and I'm on prednisone, even now 1tsp provoke terrible burning gasses). I'm sure that everything is SCD correct - the temperatures, the starter the hours needed for fermentation. I know that there are a lot of people who could not eat yogurt at all. But I want to be absolutely sure because I loved yogurt pre SCD and love it now. Of course It's not the biggest sacrifice not to eat it bit I often read that this is one of the staple of the diet and I'm sure that it's beneficial in a many ways. So, please share what were your symptoms at first, when you had a bad reactions to the yogurt, the first month when you couldn't tolerated it and how did you manage to overcome this obstacle.I know it is an often discussed topic but still. Thanks a lot in advanceYanaUC, SCD since March 2008 I reacted very badly to the yogurt at first. Guest guest
I agree, Marilyn, a food diary is a must, and I am learning that quickly. In this instance, my diary evidence suggests that I may not be ready for dairy products, or certain ones, anyway. I realized that I'd added some Hoop cheese to my omellette the day before, something I'd been avoiding, as had cramping then too, but not too bad, and no D, so I thought nothing of it. But a half hour after my posting yesterday, I found myself heading to the head 3 times in short period for full bore D, the likes of which I hadn't experienced for some time. So now I'm wary of the yogurt, but I think I'll keep trying it under different conditions to see what happens (after all, I'd just made my first batch, after a couple of failures, and I'm not eager to dump it all and give up so quickly). thanks for your comments! Guest guest
you might try goat milk yogurt - which is delicious and easier for many people to assimilate. Guest guest
The first thing was a tight burning pain in my stomach. Then I would get a sharp burning pain in my side around my right hip. Oh, and constipation. I don't know what changed. One day, I took a TBS and no initial pain in my stomach. My CD symptoms are severe inflammation so severe at my terminal illeum that it is almost blocked and constipation. Once I didn't get the pain in my stomach, I could eat the yogurt and eventually the other pain stopped too.
