Hello all!

Glad to have found this group. My name is Randall, 37 years old and

diagnosed with UC after a bout of 9 months with diarrhea and 35 lb

weight loss (but I was fine with the latter!)... In addition I have

GURD and Barret's esophagus.

I do have to say my UC symptoms were cleared up within days after

taking Lialda, but the bloating, gas (man, the smell!) and pains were

still there even though diarrhea was gone. I prefer to take control of

my life rather than my colon dictate, so SCD seemed like the right

thing to try.

I've read a number of books on both illnesses and was glad to have

come across Elaine's book! Everything in it makes sense to me. Thus, I

started the diet two weeks ago and have felt great. Renewed energy,

gas almost completely gone, and now pains have subsided. It seems when

I eat something 'illegal' pains and gas come back, albeit less severe.

Previous to reading elaine's book, I eliminated all sugar (sweets) but

now I see how sugar is EVERYWHERE! I've spent 7 months eating better

and exercising. Even with the diagnosis I haven't felt this good in

years. I think just knowing what has been wrong has helped my mind to

get back on track and get life back in order.

A few questions, however, on how to proceed. Keep in mind when

responding that I have moderate UC and GURD. I enjoy learning from

your posts and look forward to your answers to the following questions:

1. Why does the lid 'blow off' my yogurt maker when it's fermenting

(Yogourmet 2qt)?

2. Most foods (like yogurt) that are good for UC seem to affect my

acid reflux. Any thoughts on eating for both?

3. What restaurants have you had experience with as being SCD friendly

and accommodating?

4. What do you snack on?

5. Sunflower seeds legal? I sure like to chew on SF seeds!

6. I have a big family (five kids), any suggestions on cooking for the

whole family while still keeping me safe? My wife hasn't been eager to

change the way we cook (understandable with all these kids)...

7. Why does the doctor tell me to eat high fiber foods and Elaine say

the opposite?

8. Are there any 'legal' breath mints?

Thanks. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I get more into this

lifestyle change, but I appreciate any responses given at this time.

Hi Randall,

I haven't got all the answers to your questions(sorry), however, for #6 the simplest way for your wife in regards to the main meal of the day is to keep it simple & go for meat & veg. Just do without whatever the chosen carb of the day is. If you've got a really big steamer pot & you can think of something to use as a divider, then she can put whatever vegs you are having on to cook early (ie: if your vegs need to cook for 2hours , put them on to cook 2 hours before the estimated time that the rest of the meal will be done), then closer to meal time she can put the rest of the familys' veges on in the other partition. My next best suggestion (which is going to sound very female of me, so no offense intended!), is to take the bull by the horns and do your own cooking! You'll also learn a lot about YOUR foods by doing this. I might add, I know how much hard work it is to have 2 different inventories going in 1 household at meal times 'cos I did it for a long time & I know there are other people on the list who have to cope with multiple food differences as well.

All the best Randall & there will be others on the list who can attend to some of the other questions
