Guest guest
Found this, might be interesting, or might be whooey.... Relaxin Hormone Replacement Therapy Relaxin is a naturally occurring hormone found in both men and women. In females, it is secreted in the ovaries, uterus and breast tissue, and in males, it is secreted in the seminal tubule. The hormone is critical to the functioning of many parts of the human body. For example, it has been shown to effect the relaxation of smooth muscles, and it improves the integrity and quality of collagen within nerve tissue. Receptor sites for relaxin in the body include smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, the autonomic and central nervous systems, and connective tissue. After much clinical observation and work with fibromyalgia patients, Yue, M.D., has concluded that a relaxin deficiency contributes to fibromyalgia symptoms and many symptoms of aging. Dr. Yue is clinical medical director, HealthEast Pain Clinic, St. , Minn. Over 10 to 15 years, Dr. Yue repeatedly observed that some fibromyalgia patients seem to have remission of their symptoms during pregnancy. Many patients complained of exacerbation of their symptoms one week before and one week during menstruation. Relaxin is called the third major pregnancy hormone; it rises to 10 times its normal level during pregnancy. During a normal menstrual cycle, relaxin is secreted five days after ovulation and peaks at about one week before menstruation. The rise of relaxin during pregnancy corresponds to the remission. The decline of relaxin during the menstrual cycle coincides with the increased pain level one week before and one week during menstruation. By supplementing patients' diminished relaxin levels, symptoms of fibromyalgia and aging can be managed. Dr. Yue points out patterns in relaxin hormone levels: a.. The levels are cyclical - following the menses cycle with a huge increase during pregnancy b.. Relaxin slowly decreases in women during menopause (still cyclical) Dr. Yue believes this happens in large part because of the intervention/suppression of the ovarian function to secrete relaxin. Dr. Yue is working with Dr. Christian Schwabe, professor of biochemistry at the University of South Carolina, to develop better and more accurate tests to measure relaxin levels. Research shows that human relaxin is less effective at relieving symptoms of fibromyalgia than porcine relaxin. Porcine relaxin, in fact, is four times more times more effective than human relaxin. Porcine relaxin is sold under the brand names BiolaxinT and VitalaxinT. As nutritional supplements, they do not require a prescription, but SKY BioHealth recommends that patients with fibrolyalgia consult with their physicians before taking relaxin. SKY BioHealth will send information about Biolaxin, Vitalaxin and Dr. Yue's findings to any physician interested in this revolutionary treatment. © Copyright 2000-2002 Dr. Sam Yue All Rights Reserved
Guest guest
OK I'm confused, I thought that we had to much relaxin, and that is what made us too flexible. And that is what has caused us to stiffen up over the years due to the joint damage that has occurred due to the laxity that allowed the excess wear and tear of the joints.? Yet this sounds exactly what I have been thru. My Dr has suggested that I also have fibromyalgia this last visit. I am leery of another diagnosis as I am not convinced that it is not another disorder but that all these symptoms from other diseases are really a part of EDS on their own, and that because so little is known about EDS it is easier to categorize us into a disorder that the DR's feel more comfortable diagnosing because then they don't have to do the work of learning about our disorder. So whatever is close enough that is the diagnoses and they explain away symptoms that don't fit that diagnosis with another. But if it works sign me up for the relaxin, I'll try ANYTHING. What do you personally think Jill? I'd be interested in your point of view. Lorraine soon to be moving..if I get enough energy to pack!! Guest guest
Hi Lorraine, Relaxin is not somethign we with EDS ahve too much of. It is a hormone that is present during the normal menstrual cycle, but peaks during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. At this time, it is released by the fetus (in its corpus luteum stage) and affects the cervix, uterus and pelvic ligaments. Relaxin causes changes in these structures which lead to ligamentous laxity. EDS is a disorder in collagen itself, this collagen make-up is the source of our ligamentous laxity, weakness of blood vessels and organs, etc. Some with EDS on the list have found that when they were pregnant, the higher levels of relaxin helped them in terms of pain, despite making them more hypermobilie, but in others the increaded hypermobility caused huge issues with pain and overall joint stability. Hey, that's another poll topic I think! Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a chronic, wide-spread pain syndrome that involves muscles, connective tissues (tendons, ligaments), bursae, and joints. Often there is severe fatigue, feeling as if one has a constant case of the flu. Additionally, Fibromyalgia causes stiffness, particularly in the morning when the muscles seem to have " gelled " during the night. There is always non-restorative sleep. FMS patients do not get much, if any, stage 4 Delta sleep. This is the " healing " phase of sleep where repair of bodily tissues takes place. Muscles do not recover overnight as in normal individuals, hence the pain and stiffness. Many other physical conditions go hand-in-hand with Fibromyalgia: tension and migraine headaches, TMJD (temporomandibular joint dysfunction), carpal tunnel syndrome, irritable bowel and/or bladder, numbness and tingling, PMS, dry eyes and mouth, environmental sensitivities and exercise intolerance. Mentally, there can be mood swings, memory blanks and trouble concentrating (fibro fog), anxiety and panic attacks. Depression can set in as with any chronic condition. There are many other accompanying symptoms that can occur as well. Fibromyalgia Syndrome is diagnosed when a person has a history of widespread pain and painful tender points in standard areas. There must be pain on both sides of the body, pain above and below the waist, and on the spine. The doctor (usually a rheumatologist) applies a standardized amount of pressure - 4 kgs digitally (enough to make the thumbnail whiten) on each of these 18 areas. This must produce a report of pain on 11 of the 18 tender points in order to make the diagnosis of Fibromyalgia Syndrome. Currently, this is our only test for Fibromyalgia. A syndrome, not a disease, Fibromyalgia does not cause degeneration of body organs or tissues, nor does it deform. But the stress of living with a chronic, painful condition can be devastating on the patient, her/his family, and her/his work and social life. One patient may hardly notice the effects of FMS while another may be severely disabled. The cause(s) of Fibromyalgia has not yet been determined but many research studies are in progress. That's precisely what I was going to point out. : ) On the subject of the Matrix, I don't believe that someone taking relaxin short-term to increase flexibility is going to do any more permanent damage than someone who gets pregnant. The reason relaxin can be a problem for those of us with EDS is that it naturally increases that which we already have too much of - joint laxity. -Barb
Guest guest
I do know of a friend who lives nearby and is receiving Relaxin experimentally for Multiple Sclerosis. She said it has been observed that most women with MS go into remission during pregnancy. She is not able to tell yet, if it is working or not. So there must be some research going on with it for these types of purposes. Hugs, Sue
Guest guest
Hi Jill,I hope you don't mind but I'm still interested in what you think (I idolize you!) It sounds like you do believe that fibromyalgia in EDS is not any different from the general public, and the symptoms aren't EDS related. Is this correct? So does this mean we can be cured of the fibo? And regarding the hormone relaxin due to the laxity that we already have do you think that anything that causes us to increase any laxity wouldn't be a great idea when we are all trying to brace everything? Does relaxin affect anything other than laxity? I know I felt great when I was pregnant, even when I was not getting around well with the last one Cody. always said that he would love to keep me pregnant with out having all the kids that goes with that. But honestly and just my opinion I would never of had children if I had known I had EDS, its just too hard watching your son have it too and being worse than I have been, not to mention the increased stress and damage to my own body, but more so the affects of giving it too you son.
