My understanding is that it is extremely difficult to stop smoking when

you have UC. Turet, owner of the old Long Island List, tried to

stop multiple times. I don't know if she ever succeeded. I can ask

her.

Dana,

I quit smoking while on SCD, but I have to admit that I did fall off the

wagon and eat illegal foods. I had such bad cravings for chocolate and

sugar that it was dangerous for me to go shopping. I used a program

developed at Duke University called Quit Smart:

http://www.quitsmart.com/

I found a counselor in my town and I did 3 individual sessions with lots of

meditation and the nicotine patch in diminishing strengths.

But be warned, while it is very important to your overall health to quit

smoking, if you have inflammatory bowel disease, your disease may get

worse. High dose nicotine patches have shown to actually help colitis.

And lamentably, my Crohn's became worse. I suspect that's why

Turet and others like myself have such a tough time quitting.

I smoked for many years, probably over 25, so it was very hard to quit

and I tried many times. I only quit when I developed avascular necrosis

in my ankles after an injury and the doctors told me the cigarette

smoking was constricting the blood supply.

Good luck if you try to quit. Get as much help and support as you can

before you quit. I read somewhere that most people make seven serious

attempts to quit smoking before they finally quit. So don't be

discouraged.
