Guest guest
Misty,I'm so sorry you're not doing well! I don't have any experience with antifungals, natural or otherwise. I think I'd lay off of them for a while though. It doesn't sound, to me, like they are helping you much.If you suspect yeast, why not do an anti-candida form of SCD first?Kim M. knows way more about this than I do. I'm sure she'll have some helpful advice for you.You are in my thoughts.Hope you feel better!Kim H.husband, , CD 1999, SCD 2002To: BTVC-SCD Sent: Friday, January 30, 2009 12:54:14 PMSubject: Could natural antifungals cause flare or make it worse? I have been feeling pretty cruddy for the last week. Saturday I woke up 3 pounds heavier than Friday and I looked 2 months pregnant so I knew things were about to go downhill. Since I'm at the 1 year mark, I thought I was having a bad bug surge or something so I decided to start taking Oil of Oregeno, Caprylic Acid, and Olive Leaf Extract. Tuesday night I took 1 Caprylic Acid and one Olive Leaf, Wednesday morning I put 2 drops of OoO under my tongue. I realized this might be too much so I decided to rotate the meds (after being sent a snippet from pecan bread's site) and I took 1 Caprylic Acid this morning. I now look 4 months pregnant and have gained a total of 8 pounds since Friday and I have a lot of constant pressure and off and on pain (around my terminal illeum <sp?> but sometimes other places too). So my question is, could this be die off and are the natural antifungals making it worse or would you suggest sticking with them? I'm feeling almost as bad as I did when I went in the hospital 10/30/07 and I'm really really scared. For the last 2 months, I have been on a downward spiral of intermittent bloating, pain and all around discomfort but now it's to the point that I want to have my insides removed. Thanks so much for listening to my complaints and I await your replies. Misty Kimble CD - no meds SCD - 1 Year 25 days

Guest guest
Hey Misty, So sorry you are going through this. I have gone through AWFUL flares that I felt I was totally relapsing to my darkest moments with CD.. If you don't mind my saying, I don't think the way you took anti-fungals helped your situation in the slightest. It seems like a very intense and harsh routine and would personally make my downward spiral a million times worse. I suspect that you were going through a healing crisis or flare the past 2 months- or like a 9-12 month flare kind of thing. Have you tried going back to more intro style food and maybe drinking activated charcoal? I gained 12 lbs in one week at some point. My doc said hormones were part of it. How are your periods lately? Are you eating a lot of nuts and high fructose fruits? That really did me in when I experienced the bloat/sudden weight gain. I think if you want to do an anti-fungal regiment, I think you should explore and research better ways to do it. To me it seems an awfully INTENSE rotation and most people I have learned from don't do it that way.. Feel better soon.. Thinking about you.. Also, perhaps put a hot water bottle on the illeum area? Guest guest
I wanted to add that Yes, I personally have experienced natural anti fungals making me worse and causing a flare to linger. Jodi
Guest guest
Misty I think you might have been in a healing phase flare; it's common to occur around the year-on-SCD mark. When these flares happen, I always fall back to my version of the intro. diet for a day or two, then stick to easy-to-digest foods for a few weeks. I'm not sure using an antifungal, even if a natural one, will help. It can definitely make things worse, based on my research. I haven't been able to touch a natural antifungal since the first time I took a dose of Diflucan 5 years ago that sent me to the ER with a severe allergic reaction. So I don't have any personal experience to back up my statement that antifungals can make things worse, but I have done a lot of reading on antifungals and the role our microorganisms play in our intestinal tract. Of course you could also have developed another health problem, so I wouldn't let it go too long before checking in with your doctor. When I get a severe symptom flare and am not sure what triggered it, or even when I do know what probably caused it, I always stop taking all supplements (and medications if they are ones I can safely stop without checking with my doctor first) and go back to my version of the intro. diet, or clear liquids if I'm feeling very bad. If I start feeling better in two days, then I know my problem is likely something I've swallowed. I graduate to soft, easy-to-digest foods for another 4 to 5 days, but don't add back the supplements yet, and see how I'm doing. If my symptoms return with a vengeance, then I make an appointment to see my doctor. If not, then I graduate to more advanced foods for a few weeks. Only then do I add back the supplements, one at a time. Just some ideas. Kim M. SCD 5 years

Guest guest
> Have you tried going back to more intro style food and maybe drinking activated charcoal? Yes, I'm back on the intro diet right now. Have been eating chicken soup, gelatin, and boiled eggs for the last 4 days and I'm feeling better. I still can't wear any of my jeans because of bloating but I haven't had pain in almost 24 hours. I poured the boiling water over the charcoal, but forgot to take it. Thanks for reminding me. > I gained 12 lbs in one week at some point. My doc said hormones were part of it. How are your periods lately? I have on about every 3 weeks (on occassion 4). They are heavy with no cramping and very little PMS. Before SCD my periods lasted 7-10 days with lots of cramping and severe PMS. I will take a period every 3 weeks that only lasts 4-5 days with none of the side effects. I started my period unexpectantly yesterday but the problems started almost 2 weeks ago with it getting very bad last Sunday. > Are you eating a lot of nuts and high fructose fruits? That really did me in when I experienced the bloat/sudden weight gain. I eat very little fruit. I do keep cans of pineapple around for when I need something in a pinch. > I think if you want to do an anti-fungal regiment, I think you should explore and research better ways to do it. To me it seems an awfully INTENSE rotation and most people I have learned from don't do it that way.. I've stopped completely and plan on doing some more research. I need to get over to Healing Crow and ask some questions. > Feel better soon.. Thinking about you.. Thank you Jodi!!!! You are always so helpful!!!! Guest guest
> If you suspect yeast, why not do an anti-candida form of SCD first? Hi Kim, I don't think I could do the anti-candida form of SCD because I have such a sweet tooth. I just know I wouldn't be able to stick to it. Thanks so much for the suggestion. I was just diagnosed with my 6th auto immune disease last week. 4 of them have to do with skin. CD is the only one that affects my digestive system though. Thanks so much for your response. I have taken myself off all supplements and have started the diet over. Misty
