i'm an excited and petrified 19 y.o. from wisconsin and my surgery is

january 15th! Any suggestions on what to eat and what to avoid in the

liquid/aqueous diet that i get to " enjoy " post op? Any help at all

would be lovely! Also pain factor i want to take into consideration.

I'm pretty good w/ it since i had my wisdom teeth out Dec.01. But

scale 1-10. And any other just nice helpful hints of shared

experiences i'd love ! Thanks so much and wish me luck ! paula

Hi, and welcome here!

What you gonna have done? Upper? Lower? forward? Backward? Up? palate

expansion? (We offer a real smorgasbord of choices on this site, but

somehow folks seem to prefer to sample fewer, rather than more!)

Are you going to be wired, or banded, or neither? With or without a

splint?

All those things will make a difference for you. There have been lots

of posts about the pain factor. Most people, believe it or not, do

not have much bad pain. Numbness, yes. Swelling, yes. And congestion,

if they're working on your upper.

Read around in the back posts a bit, then come back with some

specifics... And you'll find ideas and experiences on the geocities

ortho surgery support board, too.

a,

From one Wisconsinite to another Good Luck!! You will do fine - I

had upper and lower done and it wasn't painful but very uncomfortable

for a week - ok 2 actually! Mine was a little extensive as my

surgery lasted over 8 hours. The worst part was the first week - I

was swollen and had a hard time breathing due to the work on the

upper - nose was out of commission and I was really swollen so that

was tricky. As for eating - well, the first few weeks is hard

because it is all liquid and through a syring. After the splint came

out I couldn't stand it anymore so I tended to eat a lot of mac and

cheese cut into tiny tiny pieces and ate it whole. I really pushed

the calories with the shakes - add peanut butter for the protein,

bananas, etc. I healed well and quickly because I believe I ate some

shakes you would cringe at - calorie city but you need the protein

etc. Don't let anyone fool you - this was the toughest thing I did

but it was so worth it! I am 33 and it made a world of difference in

my headaches, eating, everything! I didn't get insurance coverage

either and that is rough fighting them - I am persuing it with

lawyers at this point because mine was a little different but even if

they don't pay (insurance) I still think it was worth it - I look at

it like buying a car only I never get to drive it and it is a really

nice car! HA HA Remember that all things worth doing take time and

the healing will come in due time - be patient and good luck!

Hi there..I just had surgery and I can tell you that if you are wired

shut like I am your best friend will be the syringe/cathedor gizmo

they give you at the hospital. My doc subscribed liquid Ibuprofin

and also liquid vicodine. I've not had to use the vicodine yet but

have been taking the iburpofin every six hours or so. I'd say the

pain is a 4 on a scale of 1-10. Make sure you have a blender, a

strainor to strain the food after you blend it...you need to be able

to fit in the feeding tube. I've been drinking ensure....pretty good

so far, and juice....apple and prune juice. You might want to order

one of those jaw wraps from this website...http://www.zip-n-

squeeze.com/

The jaw wrap works great. The surgery was not bad...I feel alot

better today. I'd say that first night is the worst, so you just

need to get through that and the rest seems to get a little better!

Hi Gray... I am delighted to hear that you feel I did not mislead you

about the jaw wraps.. I found them wonderful, and sooo much easier

than any other approach to that part of the problem.

Sounds like you're doing well. Just hang on to your patience, and

keep on keeping on, and you'll get there.
