Guest guest
The outer lid blew off of my Yogourmet yogurt maker this summer. In my case it meant the water (and also my yogurt) were fermenting at too high a temperature. You can try to ferment your yogurt by leaving the outer lid off. Still put the inner, tight fitting lid on though. Check the temperature of the water bath to make sure it is about 105 – 110* F. I did this and I checked the temperature pretty frequently (about every 15 minutes) for the first few hours, then started spreading the time between temperature checks out until I was checking about every 2 hours. I did not check the temperature over night when I was asleep. At least this summer, I found that even with the outer lid off, the Yogourmet still heated to well above 110*, so I knew this was too high a temperature for fermenting my yogurt. Then I read a tip about using a lamp dimmer switch to regulate the temperature of the water and yogurt. I got a Lutron lamp dimmer switch from my local hardware store for about $15. One other tip I have read, but not tried, to keep the water and yogurt temperature within the proper range is to change out the water with cool water about half way through the process. Here is a blog post showing how the dimmer switch works http://eatingscd.wordpress.com/?s=yoghurt+trick Actually, this whole blog is a pretty interesting read. I'm fairly new here too (around 3 months), but I'll try to answer what I can of your questions: 1. Why does the lid 'blow off' my yogurt maker when it's fermenting (Yogourmet 2qt)? I have this same yogurt maker, but have never experienced the lid blowing off. Have you checked the temperature of how hot your yogurt is getting while you're cooking it?
