Guest guest
Hi all, I just got the results of my blood work back. I am 7-weeks post-partum and breastfeeding, so I need to make sure my blood levels are all in line. Normally, my surgeon does not test for zinc, or recommend regular supplements except for the normal multi-vitamin, but I asked for some extra tests this time based on what I have learned from this group. So, my Zinc level came out low at 664. The minimum normal level is 700. I don't know if it has been low all along, or if this is a new development since I have no previous tests to compare it to. I am wondering how much additional zinc I should add to my regimen, and can I take it at the same time as iron, or do they compete like iron and calcium do? Does anyone have experience with this? Guest guest
Yes, I do-my zinc tends to be low if I am not careful-I do at least 200 mg of zinc every day-this is along with the zinc I get from my multi-vits. Zinc is great for your hair, nails, skin and immune system. Be careful though-you don't want it too high-start off slow and do your labs every 90 days-and always always take zinc with food or protein shakes-if you do it on an empty stomach it will burn like hell! Be sure and talk to your doc about this. good luck ej Zinc supplements Hi all, I just got the results of my blood work back. Guest guest
The FDA Recommended Daily Intake is 15 mg for zinc and 18 mg for iron. Two excellent food sources for zinc are red meat and egg yolks. All the minerals, iron, zinc, copper, etc. compete with calcium for absorption. Since calcium is supplemented at a rate of 1000+ mg a day versus 15-18 mg for other minerals, it wins the absorption competition. For this reason, calcium should be taken separately from other minerals. Iron, zinc and copper will also compete with each other for absorption. Iron, if taken in a ratio greater than 2:1 to zinc, will win the absorption contest, but if taken in a ratio less than 2:1, zinc will hold its own. If you want to take a separate zinc supplement, take zinc amino acid chelate (pronounced 'keylate'). Zinc amino acid chelate is a dipeptide compound with two amino acid molecules attached to a single zinc molecule. No digestion is required for the body to strip the amino acid molecules and free the zinc. WalGreens sell zinc amino acid chelate capsules for about $3.95 for 100, or there abouts. You would be just as well off though to take a multivitamin that has zinc in an amino acid chelate form. Ray Hooks Lynn Karagory wrote: > > Hi all, > I just got the results of my blood work back.
