Guest guest
Yes, watch TV and people don't know who was the leader of Germany during WWII!!! Again I blame the psych's for screwing up our school system. Years ago I played a game of Trivial Persuit with my parents and they knew freakin EVERYTHING. I got my butt kicked. I had many theories why this was but since researching when psychology entered into the school systems, around 1962, school scores have dropped through the floor. I had a friend tell me he did this " new thing " in the 70's called phonics. Good Lord, that's what our founding fathers used to self teach themselves. The psych's had tossed workable stuff out for some feel good crap and here we are. One dumb nation under God. Jim > President Bush frequently talks about the importation of drugs from Canada > as a safety issue. " Just want to make sure they're safe. When a drug comes > in from Canada, I want to make sure it cures you and doesn't kill you, " he > told the nation during this year's final presidential debate. > The very fact that this moron could make this statement about drugs from Canada, and that Americans ACTUALLY buy into this b.s. is a sign that we are getting to be one of the dumbest populations on the planet. What is Canada, some Fourth World backwoods republic mixing up their pharmaceuticals in a garage somewhere? Do Americans even know that most drugs are made offshore, shipped all over the world, and that Canada has the very same drugs that we do. This Theatre of the Absurd just blows my mind. Arrrggggggggh. Why didn't he just fess up that he's trying to protect the pharmas who give him beaucoup bucks. " Blind Reason " a novel of pharmaceutical intrigue Think your antidepressant is safe? Think again. Guest guest
and Niles, I hadn't thought about it but it makes sense that someone would bootleg pharmacuticals, hell they bootleg illegal drugs. I still think Bush is making it out much worse than it probably is unless your buying the drugs off a website or something. Jim You need to wake up Niles, clear your glasses and reread what I wrote. I did not say all drugs sold in Canada are bootlegged - I said some are. And I stated a person has no guarantee of which he is getting because of the lack of regulation in other countries. You are in a dream world if you do not yet comprehend how much bootlegging goes on or how many drugs ARE produced in unlicensed, illegal labs - oil drums, bathtubs, etc. Do you dispute it goes on with blue jeans, movies, electronics? Name brand sells. Trademark, copywrite, and patent violations are a big issue in the international market we now live in. And the overregulation of companies in this country is another. Do you honestly think that no one is producing these drugs illegally, violating patent laws? Do you honestly think OSHA inspects all the labs or that you can be assured you are getting what you believe you are getting if you buy outside of this country? Do you honestly think the labs making illegal drugs such as meth, heroine and cocaine only make the " illegal " drugs? Xanax and Paxil are popular street drugs. Go look at buying them on line and get a view of the online pharmacies before you dispute me back. Drug companies are only part of the story - they supply a product that meets a demand. They have made so much money because people want pills to solve their problems and they will stick anything in their mouth. In fact, it is usually what people have stuck in their mouths that creates the need for the drugs in the first place. Don't be naive to think that a few particular drug companies are the only ones who are taking advantage of our own irresponsibility and going for the big bucks to be made. Guest guest
Niles, What do you mean where do I get my info? I live on the planet called Earth in the 21st century. There is plenty to read on counterfit designer drugs and other products in newspapers and magazines. It's all about the global economy, international laws, etc etc. This thread started with quotes from the President of the United States talking about it. I also have mentioned having a friend in the profession. He has been traveling in a foreign country the last year. I asked him to buy a particular drug for me at the greatly reduced price available in that country. I got a very adamant - no way - for exactly this reason. I also sat in a meeting yesterday and listened to a president of a company explain this whole situation to someone else and the commitments he makes in writing to his customers to guarantee the drugs he delivers are not counterfeit. The example he gave dealt with Lipotar - the Canadian pharamacy will pay something like $1.50 a pill. The counterfiet makers will sell their product to him in the neighborhood of a penny a pill. Just cheating on his orders for 1 month can make him a millionaire. You might better understand if you realise that drug companies do not sell you, Niles, the drug. They sell to wholesalers and distributors who sell directly to you, to pharmacies, and to pharmacy benefit managers. Their price is not that substantially different from one to the other - volume makes it for them. Your price however can be that different depending where you buy because all these levels are grabbing their piece of the pie. it may be several levels before finally getting to you. In other words, the profit margin to the drug company is not that greatly different in Canada than the US. Guest guest
I believe you, and we do need to be protected from this kind of " entrepreneurialism. " However, it is ironic to hear our President talking about his concern for the " safety " of drugs, given what we know about his father's role in the approval of Prozac, which opened the floodgates on this SSRI phenomenon. Having read Breggin's account, based on FOI-obtained FDA records, Prozac was approved for market in spite of, not because of, the clinical trial outcomes. Guest guest
What Bush said was he thought the US should take action to assure people get legit drugs. What is wrong with that? Legit drugs can be bad enough as SSRIs show. I mean, the world is a mess but keep perspective - let wrong be wrong and let right be right. Bush may be wrong on many things but he is right on that one and he is right on tort reform. Tort reform doesn't come because of trial lawyers who actually have a much more powerful lobby than the drug companies or the AMA. They have been getting filthy rich off of malpractice. Lawyers are exploiting the health industry ever bit as much as the drug companies. And the bootleggers are doing it as well. Even the alternative stuff is full of scam. Guest guest
, Your understanding that the US is rejecting Canadian drugs is not correct. See for example: http://seniorliving.about.com/od/lawpolitics/a/reducedrugcosts.htm " While importing Canadian drugs is against U.S. policy, the FDA has said that it will not prosecute individuals who import small (3 months or less) amounts for personal use. " In fact, legislation is now under way in the US to formally legalize the import of Canadian drugs. See for example: http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2007/05/03/drugs-import.html?ref=rss " The U.S. Senate came one step closer on Thursday to allowing Americans to import more low-cost prescription drugs from Canada and other countries. The Senate voted 63-28 to end the debate over an amendment to Food and Drug Administration legislation. " May 3, 2007 news item] I have not had any problems buying drugs in Canada.
