Cast iron pans - question about preseasoning

After months of searching I finally decided to offer me one or two cast iron pans. One because I am a big kitchen amateur and i read it is great to prepare foods inside and two, i want to get some of the iron from cooking inside :)

I am here in France where the most known products are Le Creuset of course but they are all with enamel coating (and i think this prevents iron from getting into food) so if i am guessing right, they are not what i am searching for. As for ordinary cast iron pans (that i saw cost almost nothing in US) they are close to impossible to find here and if i do find one it is always extremely expensive. And ordering from US is not an option because cast iron is way too heavy so even if i buy it cheap there i would have enormous delivery costs.

So i came upon one english website who has a sale on them and it makes a fairly good deal. They sell from two companies, one is Lodge Logic (US) and another one from Sweden called Skeppshult. Both seem good to me, i am even thinking of buying one from each company but here comes my question:

Both use preseasoning. And when i checked what vegetable oil they use here is what they say on their websites:Lodge Logic:Lodge's foundry seasoning is similar to a home-seasoning method, but on a larger scale. The

cast iron is sprayed with a soy-based vegetable oil and then baked on

at a very high temperature. The heat allows the oil to penetrate into

the iron, creating a black patina finish with superior appearance and

performance than home seasoning. Skeppshult:No colouring or other chemicals are used in the production of

Skeppshult's cast iron products. The black platinum (the colour) is the

result of Skeppshult pre-treating their products with rape oil from

Carlshamns. This provides the products with a nice, black colour and

means that the product is finished and can be used immediately. In this

way, the products have a so-called Natural non-stick protection,

without any chemicals. (No measures need to be taken before the product

is used. However, a quick rinse using hot water to get rid of possible

dust is recommended).I know on SCD oils are not problematic but i read on BTVC legal food items that canola oil (which is the same as rape oil if i am not mistaken) is not recommended and i also saw somewhere that soy oil is not to be used. Can this oil from preseasoning interfere with my SCD foods and possibly cause problems or does it go away after first use and then i season it as i desire?

So i need advice, can i still buy any of these pre seasoned iron pans or not? Thanks for your advice.Janja UC since july 07SCD since august 07no meds; 33 weeks pregnant

Janja,

I have a Lodge Logic frying pan that I'm very happy with as a tool. I

have to admit that I didn't give any thought to the kind of oil used

in their seasoning though.

I don't know if there is enough oil on those pans to create a problem

or not, but perhaps you could de-season a pan by using a degreasing

dish soap and then reseason it yourself.

I have a wok that I seasoned with canola before I realized that it was

bad. I then scrubbed it clean with abrasive pads and dish soap and

reseasoned it with walnut oil.

Just a thought.

Cheers,
