Guest guest
It is well-known that exercise does help with depression. I don't personally get the 'runner's high' that people talk about; I don't like exercise and have to force myself to do it---but I like the way I feel when I've done it, and I like what it does to strengthen my body and help with weight loss. New postops need to exercise to avoid pneumonia and blood clots, and I do think it helps those that are prone to depression. Just do it! Guest guest
Connie, From your mouth to my energy and willingness. I find it soooo difficult ot get out and do it. And I've always heard it feels good. I tend to yawn through it, must not be breathing well enough. > > For those of you who are having trouble with depression how much > excercise > > are you getting? Guest guest
Hi Curt You should be on an exercise program now. You will start walking within hours of surgery. If you have open RNY, you will be walking at a slow/normal pace for about 6 weeks. Like around the block, etc. After that your doctor will let you know if you are ready for more strenuous exercise. What I found works for me...something I now do 6 times a week( I take Sundays off) and I miss it when I dont do it...is the treadmill. It is more convenient than trying to get to the gym due to my work schedule and cost of monthly membership. Its here at my home inside so there is no using the weather as an excuse. In fact it was recommended by DR Fisher. I walk for one hour everyday at approx 3.4 miles per hour. Some days I walk at a faster rate. Some days at a little slower, if my shin splints are hurting, Ive got cramps etc. One important thing that has made it doable for me is that it is scheduled into my morning routine. I wake up, walk, take my shower, drink my protein shake and get ready for work. You have to make it part of your daily routine. Im a morning person, so walking in the morning works very well for me. I never exercised before surgery. I half heartedly walked while losing my 10%, but it was on my lunch hour and only for 30 minutes. The treadmill has made it convenient and I do it regularly!! Guest guest
Hi Curt, If you haven't started any type of exercise yet you really need to start to do something now. I know that when you are heavy it is really hard to do it but you need to try to get your body in the very best condition possible. So if you don't belong to a gym you can start out by walking. If you are not used to walking very much you can start out as they say by doing baby steps and working your way up so that you will be able to walk 20 minutes. In SSF that was one of the most important things is that you be doing exercise. When the case manager checks to see if you are ready for surgery that is one of the questions that she will ask and if it is determined that you are not doing any exercise you won't get your surgery date very quickly. When I started the process I weighed 357 so for myself the best exercise was the water aerobics. It is so gentle on your body. The excess weight did a lot of damage to my joints so now even though I am weighing 218 I still go there because I have a lot of problems with my ankle and my knee on my left leg. After surgery I did do the walking and as soon as there were no scabs left and with the doctors OK I started back in the pool. The pool was a little harder to do after surgery but by the time 7 weeks had gone by I was back to doing a full hour of water aerobics. So good luck and keep asking the questions. Guest guest
Curt, the first few weeks it was just walking, very slow at first. At about 4wks post op (from open) I was back in the pool doing water aerobics...which was slow at first too, especially the ab workout. But gradually increased and now at 3 and a half mo out I do 3-4 days at the pool and 3-4 days depending on the treadmill (which is what I was doing just before surgery)...I try to do something at least 6 days a week. Guest guest
yes, I forgot to say...start your exercising now, before surgery...makes recovery and getting back to moving a lot easier, I think.
