Guest guest
I must admit to knowing nothing about the Guaifenesin protocol, but what on earth does one have to do with the other? Why these no-nos? Really curious. ~Jennie **************************************Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. Guest guest
Yup, link worked fine. Thanks! I've gotta look into this. Interesting. Don't think I will try it though. I have too many issues with Guaifenesin as it is. My body does not handle any type of chemical or drug. I am going to read this though. ~Jenn **************************************Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. Guest guest
See, I'm just no disciplined enough to do this. I'm like you - too many no-no's. What's left? Caroline Witte wrote: > I finally decided to do a more in-depth check on the guaifenesin protocol. What I found is that nearly all of my favourite products are no-nos. Even the one brand of facial care products I am able to use, including their lipstick and mascara would be no-nos. I COULD do without the lipstick and mascara, but I do need creams and lotions. My skin is SO dry. Of course there are a multitude of foods on the no-no list, and my foods have already been cut following the IBS diet, I don't know what there would be left for me to eat. This seems so extreme. I just don't know how people can do this. I mean, things I love like mint and lavender are also no-nos. I use those and others on the 'no' list as aromatherapy, which brings me a lot of relief. I guess I am simply in shock, reading of all the things one must forego, and so many of them are things I have found helpful. NO herbal supplements are allowed on this, and only certain vitamin supplements. No toothpastes with mint. No soaps with glycerin. No...just about anything it would seem. HOW do people manage doing this? I always said I would do anything it took to get rid of the monster, but maybe I just don't really mean it? Has anyone here ever done this, eliminating everything on the 'no-no' list? I am so curious. > > Peace and Love > Caroline > >
Guest guest
Apparently anything containing salicylates interfere with the guaif working as it should. The theory behind this seems to be that our bodies (Those with CFS/FM) build up an excess of phosphates, and the guaif can eliminate them. He says that: " Guaifenesin’s effect on the kidney is blocked by the chemical salicylate " You can read more about it here: http://www.immunesupport.com/library/showarticle.cfm?id=7514 & T=CFIDS_FM & B1=EM120\ 507F That link printed out strangely, I hope it's useable. Guest guest
My body doesn't handle a lot of drugs well, either, but the guiafenisen hasn't been a problem for me. I bought some guiafenesin and started taking it and tried to ease into the protocol. I switched toothpaste and mouthwash, and cut back on some other things and then got that " awwww screw it " attitude and stopped taking it. I had noticed that my IBS problems had significantly improved, but did not attribute it to the guiafenesin. I didn't completely make that connection until I quit taking the guai. Makes me wonder if FMS causes some type of absorption problem. (for me at least) I was experimenting with the guai - taking 1200mg sustained release twice daily for a while, and then bought some capsules that were 400mg (NOT sustained release) and was taking those 3-4 times a day. I may be imagining it, but I think I feel a little better taking them than not taking them, even if I don't follow the protocol exactly. I do try to cut way back on sugar and caffeine and drink more water. I think I will start keeping a symptoms journal that also journals my supplements - which now consists of SAM-E, guaifenesin, multivitamin, chromium picolinate, ALA, CLA, milk thistle - these are the ones I don't feel I can do without without being completely miserable and getting the tin-man effect. in Louisiana > > Yup, link worked fine. Guest guest
When I went on it, it was advised to begin with a basic soap and moisturizer that were on the OK list. You have to use products with only chemicals, no natural ingredients. That's not an easy thing in this day and age. The nation is on a natural products kick. Also, some people are more salicylate sensitive then others. I was able to get by using Crest orange or cinnamon toothpaste even though there is a touch of mint in those. I found some Suave shampoos without natural ingredients, an Equate brand shower gel(blue anti-bacterial like Dial), Neutrogena T-Gel shampoos for my psoriasis(one had some natural product, but I only used it once or twice a week) and at the time, Jergens made a lotion that had no natural ingredients. As you've said, you seem to need Aveeno products and such for your dry skin, so these may interfere with the protocol. It takes a long time to purge the phosphates or whatever they're called from the kidneys, so you may not notice an improvement right away. But some people did notice a dramatic improvement in their pain levels after that initial slam of flaring. And I know that some people try to get around the salycilate thing by taking higher doses of the guaifenesin. Don't know if any of this helps or not. Guest guest
I bet it works for some people. But I was just thinking .... the shopping trip alone would put me into a flare. LOL. Seriously though, I hope it works for alot of people and I have heard some good things about it. I have also heard that the first few days or weeks makes you feel even worse until the protocol is followed for a while. I just fear that I don't have enough time to get use to the protocol and would have to miss alot of work I cannot afford. love, Debra V. Guest guest
Have read about this before with the guiafen. " cure " , not enough evidence to prove it works, from what I remember reading, not something I would personally try but if u believe it will it might work for you.
